How in the hell do birds like snow geese and egrets stay so freaking white? They wallow around in mud all day and look like they got dipped in bleach. I wear a white shirt around the house and By the end if the day it looks 12 years old. Wth?

Oils on their feathers.
Ever have a bird hit your windshield?
It took me months to get the oil and film off after I hit a bird one time. Nasty, sticky, greasy shite!

Birds have a uropygial gland, your shirt does not.

I understand that. Well no, I don't know what uropygial means, but it's not that they are just clean, they are freaking sonic white. Even places they can't clean, like on the top of their heads.

The uropygial gland is located at the base of the birds tail. It secretes the oil that the bird uses to preen its feathers with. Ever noticed that a duck will rub its bill at the base of it's tail before preening its feathers? The oil gets on the bill/beak and the bird then transfers this oil to all its feathers. The oil acts as a barrier against water, dirt etc. A lot of this has to do with chemical bonding as well. You know, water and oil don't mix and so forth. Feathers also have hooks and barbs that hold the vanes tightly together, mostly for flying, but I'm sure it also helps repel dirt and water.
Well that's about all I remember from avian anatomy.
