I dont see how our President really has any impact here but would point out that the original red snapper restrictions went into place in 2008 under a guy named GW Bush.
what does this have to do with, well, anything?
I didnt like him either.

The OP squarely laid blame for the snapper restrictions on Obama. Utter nonsense, but I felt it necessary to make sure the record was clear that the snapper restrictions went into place before Obama took office.

How is it utter nonsense? I mentioned a continuing plan which would fall under this administration. I didn't lay blame for the initial restrictions on anyone. Make no mistake, the Obama administration is pushing policies that restrict recreational fishing.
If bush did it too, so be it.

Why not attend the meeting this evening on regional management?

. To this day, there is no reason why redfish shouldn't be able to be caught by commercials
it would be like putting Sandusky back in charge of a boys camp

Good analogy. I doubt CCA would ever let it happen, but if you limited them to 5 per person like the recs have, I could see doing this. Maybe get some La redfish back in restaurants on a limited basis.

Sure. I don't seem to catch any more redfish recreationally now in Venice than I did in the late 80's and 90's. Gill nets and redfish have been banned for over 16+ years. And the Venice area probably has the largest or close to the largest redfish population in the country. Venice is where my family's seafood dock was. Most of the overfishing was with bull reds caught offshore in seine nets.
I do agree it needed to be heavily regulated but not an outright ban. It should have been a limited gill net season with quoatas similar to what they do in Alaska. At the very least it should have been a rod n reel quoata.
A regulated commercial industry is no different than a regulated recreational industy. All that matters is total pounds harvested.

That's because the CCA is a much larger lobbying group than anything the commercials ever had and had a lot more political pull and money also. This is exactly what I said earlier in this thread. The truth is in what happened. The CCA got their way. Louisiana politics at its finest.

I hope the OB posters are chiming in with input to the Gulf Council. Point out that if the administration is so worried about the snapper and other reef fish populations, they should quit paying all that money to his campaign contributors that are removing all the habitat at a record clip. I wonder where the enviro wacko's are as the explosions while removing rigs full of fish cause massive fatalities. Guess they are too worried about the possibility that Ted Nugent might stick an arrow in one deer to worry about thousands and thousands of fish perishing at the flip of a switch.
