All games available as Digital Downloads on release day?

I am calling it and saying this will happen with the next gen systems. Of course they still will offer physical copies for people with shitty internet or that just like buying physical copies but digital just makes sense.
It's cheaper to distribute. You don't need a middle man retalier to offer it. You could realistically offer your product for cheaper therefore possibly moving more copies and end up making more money. Also, you can't trade in a digital copy so it elimanates that part of the market. All perfect if you are a dev/publisher.
As a consumer you have a digital library that is easier to access and manage and you get your games cheaper. Also, you get smaller devs taking risk and are actually abl to get their games to you.
Xbox sort of already has the latter with Indie Games and the Arcade and I know PS offers SOME titles as DD on relase day but I think this all will be industry wide.
Even Gamestop is pushing it's digital distribution these days.

Win win for everyone? After using Steam the last few months I say yes.

Sounds logical to me. I end up installing my games to the Xbox anyway before I play them. It usually takes 10-15 minutes to download a game.
It would take all the fanfare out of midnight release tho lol

Blockbuster and Movie Gallery eventually died out. It's just what happens.

Other than LOL'ing at the pictures on the internet the day after this has 0 effect on me. I have never gone to a midnight release.

I also think more and more of our content, saves, misc stuff will be stored in cloud storage.

They are really going to have to ramp up the capacity of the drives on future systems then. And what happens if it crashes? Where are those games? You'll have to buy a new console and then "Hey, gotta buy new games since this is a new console"?

Cloud, maybe
And with Steam, if something gets lost, those games are tied to my account, so I can re-download them whenever.

No doubt but again cloud storage will be a huge part of it all as well.
Hard drives are pretty cheap too.

No. In digital services on PC like Steam, Origin, etc those games are tied to the profile. It would be the same on console. Get a new console and just re-download the games.

I would think they would tie to your GT and like stout said more and more would be cloud storage eliminating both of those concerns

OK, I don't really know anything about Steam.

Steam is the gaseous form of water. It is used to power some locomotives

Only if the price isn't still 59.99 like most games still are on Xbox live. If you make the games back down to say 39.99 available via digital download, that would be pretty great. Microsoft would get the whole 40$ and you wouldn't even have to leave you're house to get the latest stuff.
Although I'm always weary about this kind d stuff considering of your Xbox goes out or something like that. How will you be protected against losing games already purchased?
ETA: Just read about the games being tied to say your gamer tag. But what about saved games and whatnot? Will that be tied too? While I'd be pretty happy about still having the game I wouldn't be too happy about having to start it all over

Has been addressed in at least 3 different posts.

Amen to that. If there to let Gamestop run this, we might get them for 59.98. But 39.99 seems like a reasonable price. Wishful thinking, probably.

You'll still have everyone trying to play at the same time, and everything is so slow that it is unplayable. And there's probably a minor bug that everyone freaks out about. The launch is immediately panned as the worst launch ever and by the time anyone wakes up on day 2 everything works perfectly.

On average new releases on Steam, Origin, Uplay, etc start off $10 cheaper than the physical copies. Also, they go on sale sooner and far cheaper than physical copies.

This could pose a problem for those of us who can only run at 3Mbps
Posted on 1/8/13 at 10:35 am to Broke
I am only at 10 but like I said they will still have the physical copies for sale. Too many people in the US that still don't have fast enough internet to take advantage of digital downloads.

Whew. I'm at 16.11 at my office but can only get 3 at home less than a mile away. fricking ridiculous
Posted on 1/8/13 at 10:38 am to stout
It will be both
The reason being is for people who have a cap on the home internet
