I hate these things. Anyone know what they're called? Any tips for preventing them?

Thistle. I assume you reside under a rock or something in the middle of a city

Thistle, eat them with hot sauce.
24D will kill the crap out of them. Or roundup. Make sure to get them before they seed, then your just spreading seeds.

Just pull them up or cut them all at the base and burn them, their seeds just float in the wind. Prevention will take help from your neighbors to keep the population down.

Thanks.
No I don't live under a rock, I've just never had a proper name to give them.
Haven't mowed lawn in many weeks, and some of these big bastards sprouted up in some corners and untended garden areas.

I used to eat them with vinegar, salt and pepper when I was a kid. I have some in the field behind my house. I may have to try out that hot sauce

You know I looked it up and you are right. We always called it Sow Thistle though. Looks a lot a like though. I can see where people get it confused.
