re: The catch-22 that is being Les Miles

quote:I call BS on this statement. First of all, you can't speak for "most" people here. You can speak for yourself. If it's your impression that most people who think Miles underachieves are also people who don't like him you are sadly mistaken. A lot of people who like Les Miles also think he underachieves, with whatever level of talent LSU is currently serving as a team. And while a lot of mouths mouth off about LSU's talent being better than anybody's, even you admit LSU recruits "as well as anyone." IMO, what you have missed is that if you are correct, then our offensive talent must surely be good enough to not look like it has looked the last several years. And in particular this year, when it seems like scoring touchdowns, and hell, even getting key first downs, is a massive, titanic struggle.
Most people that don't like Miles and think he vastly underachieves do so because they vastly OVERestimate our talent advantage over everyone else.
You say...
quote:True. And I say, "Sometimes the plan stinks. Sometimes the plan looks more like no plan. Sometimes, a lot of times, the plan needs some serious work." It seems to me, and I like Les Miles as a person and want desperately for him to overcome these last few years of offensive malaise, that he needs to do some serious coach work on fixing what's broken. Because it is broken. The offense, I mean. And it's not just because there isn't enough LSU talent out there to make it work.
Sometimes things don't according to plan.

the same record but did it with better coaching
All anyone wants is good coaching. Winning and good coaching creates recruiting opportunity. When kids want to play for you it's more choosing than recruiting.

Lsu is going to bring in back to back top 5 classes. The doom and gloom recruiting hopes of some are just going to have to keep waiting like the previous 7 years.
yet again you contradict yourself.

The consensus topic seems to be that Miles doesn't do enough with the players he has. Its as if Miles is just given the recruits and gets ZERO credit for them. I agree our offense has problems and needs to change. But lets not act like he's Zook or Orgeron that does absolutely nothing with the talent they brought in.
Top rated talent offensively and defensively. Defensive talent lives up to the hype while offensive talent seems to never live up to the billing.
Sure we see flashes of the talent but overall our offensive unit looks and plays like a bunch of 2 star recruits. Our offense usually is rated in the bottom half of D-1 rankings...with top talent...it is coaching/scheme/ development or whatever else you want to call it.

All you are doing is looking to spin negative on the football program and coaches. Lsu is a talented team. They have exceptional classes coming up back to back. Those classes aren't on the team yet. The classes lsu has brought in the last 4 years are highly regarded but by no means make lsu head and shoulders more talented than every other team.
But if you want to continue to shite on the lsu program. Then go ahead and join the rest of this fricking horrible fanbase.

Agreed.
All I'm really trying to say is that miles is VERY good at one main part of his job and average at another. Its very rare to find someone who can do both consistently.

Top 5 in the country right?

Who is more talented?

Alabama is clearly more talented going by their last 4 classes.
Georgia and Florida have a big argument for claiming more talent.
Auburn has even had better classes than lsu recently.

Clemson had the eight ranked defense in the ACC giving up 400+ yards per game. LSU's offense should gain more than 200 yards against Clemson and certainly not have nine 3 and out series. The Towson and Clemson coaches said publicly that the LSU offense is easy to figure out. What more is needed for Miles to understand his offense is under achieving?

So if Miles recruits like crap, we'll expect the 1990's and if we repeat 2008 every year...everyone wins!!!

quote:Some just will not look at it square on and call it like it is. Glad you spelled it out in plain English. Hell, even with mediocre talent on offense, LSU should have more to show for effort made than we have shown. Struggles to score TD, struggles to get first downs, struggles to sustain long drives are not a product of lesser talent. They are an indicator of two things: underachievement/complacency and a serious lack of any kind of effective offensive scheme/game plan. Game after game. Ask yourself: when's the last time you've seen LSU blow out an opponent on offense? Even Cholly Mac's defensive oriented teams would and could blow out opponents, and did. Including worthy OoC opposing teams like FSU, Notre Dame... Since 1/9/12, we're just not seeing that kind of play out of LSU.

What about going by viewing them on the field? Pretty even.

Georgia is as talented as LSU. Florida isn't.

You are telling me he cant out recruit Auburn who plays second fiddle to bama in their own state? Very telling about how "great" miles is recruiting.
Posted on 1/3/13 at 10:10 am to barry
And to summarize the OP's point: He concedes Miles can't coach or develop top shelf talent to meet expected results, however recruiting bottom shelf talent will lead to them being coached better and developed thereby meeting the lower expectations.
This thread is a winner. Printing out now and framing.

Just like others, you are reaching to spin anything related to miles to a negative.
Serious question, are you and others of the opinion that he is the worst coach in the country or something? no one shits on their team and coaches like lsu fans do.

It is pathetic that LSU trots out all this great talent every week only to watch them flounder in the offensive system that CLM has. The worst part is I watch these rent a win teams come into TS and face LSU's great defense yet they still are able to run a capable offense when you consider they have terrible talent and are facing the best talent in D-1.

Recruit a ridiculously high caliber of athletes then get killed for not turning that talent into 13-0 teams. Its as if the recruiting actually goes against him.
Any GOOD coach should have a good recruiting class at LSU due to in state talent and no other big school to compete with. I and MOST ranters don't expect 13-0 teams.
What I expect is:
1. For 4 million dollars a well coached team with discipline that improves as the year goes along.
2. For 4 million dollars a capable 2nd string QB that gets meaningful reps when able. I would also expect the offense to not be as good as when the 1st string QB was in.
3. Less taunting by our players and a decrease in
personal foul penalties.
Les has done a good job with the defense (a lot of that due to Chavis--but Les hired him).
Les has done a good job with special teams.
Les has done a poor job with the offense.

What's ridiculous is the notion that lsu has the best talent every year that rantards keep spewing. That's not even close to true. Is lsu talented? Yes. Are they in a class by themselves? Not even close.
Wtf?

7 Florida State 10117 124
8 Oklahoma 9891 111
9 Notre Dame 9834 105
10 Ohio State 9790 102
According to rivals....
So one could make the argument that LSU actually does better than the rest of the top 5 ahead of them except for bama.
But we'll just skip over that fact since it doesn't support an agenda.
Btw that's composite over the last 5 yrs.
