re: Why Do Sitcoms Always Have a Token Dumb, Borderline Retarded Character

Shows evolve to get more laughs as the actors find their characters. The first few episodes of Always Sunny, Charlie was basically a normal not terribly bright dude. By season 4 he was a huffing glue and completely illiterate. The funny thing is they have laid several hints that beneath the surface charlie is possibly some type of idiot savant genius. Lots of similarities with Kramer on Seinfeld.

A lot of token dumb characters on The Office and Parks and Rec
I was trying to single out one from The Office but I couldn't
Parks and Rec is definitely Andy though

Kevin has evolved into mildly mentally challenged. He didn't start out that way. You could also make a case for Creed. He's definitely off.

quote:Yeah the office has plenty but Michael is a classic sit-com dummy. Creed is hilarious though, not sure he completely fits the description in this situation.

Taco is brilliant. He simply chooses to focus all his brain power on getting laid.

which one is the retard on workaholics? adam or blake?
Posted on 1/2/13 at 6:26 pm to GreatLakesTiger24
hmmmm....Adam if I had to say. Although they don't really follow the classic pattern. Adam isn't actually that stupid he just has no boundaries and does really stupid things. Blake is goofy but again not really a full blown retard. Ders is more or less the straight man.

Cheers had Woody. Wings had Thomas Hayden Church. Seinfeld had Kramer. Married with Children had Kelly. Friends actually had two in Joey and Phoebe. Does a pilot just get tossed if it doesn't include a dumb character?
all of those characters were arguably the best characters on the show.

This is like asking why is theor always a hot chick on any tv show

Did NewsRadio have three of them?
Characters of Andy Dick, Joe Rogan & Vicki Lewis.
ETA: Darin was the boob on Bewitched.
What does it say about football when everyone except Christine is an idiot on Coach? Luther, Dauber, Hayden, his daughter, her husband, the AD, The owner-all stupid people.

I never watched by knowing Andy Dick, I would assume him. Pete and Pete also had Artie.

Why Do Sitcoms Always Have a Token Dumb, Borderline Retarded Character
So the American public can relate?

And actually a lot of them start out as just sort of dumber than the other characters but as the show goes on they somehow become more and more retarded, to where it's not even somewhat believable a person could be that dumb

BBT doesn't have one. Can't really argue Penny, she isnt any dumber than your typical female.
I would argue Sheldon is "special" enough to meet the sitcom requirement of having a borderline retard.
