Sounds like the Saints brass went with a "disciplinarian" defensive coordinator to replace GW who was a "player's coach". Let's hope this is the main issue behind thes comments and nothing more.
Jury is deffinitely still out on Spags.
I wouldn't be upset with a change in DC however I don't think there is any way we do it. Youhave ot to give a man that you had confidence in more than one tumultuous (understatement) year to improve things.

I seriously thought Shanle when I first read this. Of course he would love GW. Who else would have let him be a starter for 3 straight years without bringing in real competition?
As far as Spags, I doubt he didn't listen to any of the players. You could start to see, I think starting around the Philly game, that we started doing more blitzing; something the players were use to.
If we concentrate on cranking up our pass rush in the off season, we'll be fine.
I think people forget just how bad our offense looked at the beginning of the year. We were going 3 and out all the time, and while the defense was bad, the numbers were inflated.

I'm not really on board with adapting to the personnel, because frankly, they all pretty much stink. Stick it to to them and see who is still standing afterwards. Replace and move on.
We just have some dumb players on D.

Maybe it's a player that's been informed he won't be returning.

I find it hard to believe that the Saints won't commit to Spags at least one more year. Maybe Payton will be keeping closer tabs on the D this year and make sure all is well with the team

It just kills me that someone would say this because they had to learn something more complicated than "RAAAAWWWWRRRRRRRR I HAZ BLITZ!!!!"

I think they will. I mean look at the BS we had at linebacker when Spags first came here. He brought in Lofton, Hawthorne and Chamberlain. Lofton was the only one ready to go at the beginning of the season, and Shanle and Herring were the two OLB's. Those two numbnutz couldn't shed a block to save their damn lives.
Combine that with no pressure from the front four (we should look at bringing in a new d-line coach) and shitty safety play, and the offense sputtering for long stretches in games (with no run game), and it's no wonder we gave up so many yards.

sounds to me like Spags is exactly what the team needs. All of the complaints are complaining about a coach being a good coach:
He's too hard on us.
He actually runs the defense and doesn't let us do what we want.
He is serious.
He's in charge, not me.
Our defense is full of pansies.

Harper was saying earlier in the year that Spags system had a lot of gray area based on what the players saw, and left the players to make some on the field decision making.
I remember during the last Bucs game (I think) Harper gave up a long pass off of a wheel route out of the back field. His responsibility was simple: cover him unless he stays in to block, and in that case blitz. This numbnutz starts blitzing almost immediately and then is like "Oh shite" when Doug Martin is coming out of the flat.

I don't think you can read too much into this story based on this alone. If it's somebody like Shanle or Ellis, who gives a shite. Now if it's Vilma or Greer then it's an issue IMO.
quote:
"(Spagnuolo has) no patience and zero personality. (He) has a way of pissing players and our defensive coaches off with how he says and does things. (I) think it's even harder after having (former defensive coordinator) Gregg (Williams), who guys enjoyed."
If that's the case, that coupled with the horrible defense, I could see Payton letting him go.

"To give up what we gave up can't be all talent. Look at where his units (have) been ranked before. I think one top 10?"
Got me interested to see what he has historically been ranked:
2007 Giants - 17th in Points, 7th in Yards
2008 Gaints - 5th in Points, 5th in Yards
2009 Rams - 31st in Points, 29 in Yards
2010 Rams - 12th in Points, 19th in Yards
2011 Rams - 26th in Points, 27th in Yards
2012 Saints - 31st in Points, 32 in Yards

ARG!
More than those two I think. My biggest gripe was over running plays or getting locked up with o-lineman and never being seen again. The only two linebackers that I could see shoot the gaps and anticipate the play were lofton and Vilma. The rest can follow Shanle out the door.

There we go...talk about Spags. Maybe if half the guys on defense weren't slow as Terrance Cody we'd be better.
Shanle is the last person who needs to be talking. The only two things that value him are Greg Williams and Madden 2011.

Honestly, I have no sentimental reason for liking Spagnuolo. If the organization feels that getting rid of him is what they need to do, I'm okay with it.
I just have a feeling that two things happened. Spags had to play the power trip card all season with the substitute teachers in charge. And secondly, Sean Payton probably wants to work with him on overhauling the defensive personnel. I think he's staying.
