They are not excusing his behavior. He will be punished and rightfully so - no one is trying to justify his actions or prove him innocent of any wrongdoing. They are simply supporting a member of their family that made a mistake and is suffering from it, and will pay for it the rest of his life - even after he gets out of prison.

Obviously you are very young - as you get older your friends, or your family members, and even yourself, will make regrettable mistakes and go through tough times, and you will be thankful for those who reached out to support you and didn't turn their back. I was idealistic when I was in my early 20's - the older I get, the more I realize how easy one can fall, and how wrong it is to be judgmental considering that none of us is perfect.
