This question comes up every so often around here. If you are serious, I would contact the athletic department and LSU to see if you can get some information.

Was Jim Thorpe on this team?

If A&M can retroactively claim 2 NCs, we can legitimately claim 1908.

That's all I'm saying. And it's not so much claiming them as it is acknowledging that it was awarded. It's not like this is just a made up fact. LSU was awarded a National Championship in 1908, why the hell shouldn't it be acknowledged?

If we played it and won it then we should acknowledge it and add it to the list of the ones we have won. Apparently LSU did what needed to be done to be deemed champions so I say add it, JMO.

If I'm not mistaken, we don't claim it because we were awarded that title retroactively. Unlike Bama (several of theirs were awarded retroactively), we don't claim it. We have titles in '35 and '36 we don't claim for similar reasons.

because the 1908 team, lead by Doc Fenton could have legitimately been considered a professional team at the time...
Fenton was "heavy recruited" to come to LSU which meant money, whores and booze....
not that there is anything wrong with that...

There's that too, not to mention southern football obviously didn't have the same reputation back in that day.
Also, I've read in the past that Penn, Harvard and UChicago were all clearly better than LSU in '08.
But hey, if the NCF thinks we deserve a share of that title, the school might as well too.

... Isn't that why we all came here

Carlisle was a big deal then. They had Jim Thorpe!

You don't know much about college football...

'35 & '36 weren't handed out by the National Championship Foundation.

No doubt it's debatable.
Here's a decent article that breaks down the cases for each team in '08.

ETA: This part of the article cracked me up...
quote:
LSU is not even a legitimate contender. But to the school's credit, they do not claim this "national championship." Alabama would already have made the banners and rings by now if it were them.

Hm... not sure how I feel about it. Seems like he did some research, but unless he was alive in 1908, I doubt he actually saw any of those teams play. At the end of the day, he's just a blogger. He has a valid opinion, but it's no more valuable than yours or mine.
If the National Championship Foundation saw fit to award the 1908 National Title to LSU, I see no reason the football program shouldn't acknowledge it.
Plus acknowledging it is a way of validating LSU throughout the course of CFB history. It shows that LSU has always been good, unlike some flash in the pan program like Florida who's only been relevant since the 90's.

Alabama and USCw exaggerate their NC's. Our 2003 was a BCS National Championship. Our 3 are rock solid!
