His constant meddling in LSU's affairs probably hurt LSU more than it helped...besides, he already has the honor of having the old field house named after him...

For what it's worth, there is a statuette of him inside of the arena. Also, having an entire arena named after him is > than having a full-sized statue, in my opinion.

the only way we'll get an appropriate Sherman memorial
What really is appropriate for a guy that ran an institution with about 20 students, who got the job due to his political connections and held it for about full year year?
Name buildings for dead people that actually acomplished something relative to the University don't subsidize public crappy art with tax dollars.

With this as with all things Huey you've sorta got to take the good with the bad.
"In 1928, LSU was a small-time country school that generated little interest or attention in the state. Labeled a "third-rate" institution by the Association of State Universities, the school had only 1800 students, 168 faculty members, and an annual operating budget of $800,000. In 1930, Huey Pierce Long, Jr., the governor of Louisiana, initiated a massive building program on campus to expand the physical plant and add departments.
By 1936, LSU had the finest facilities in the South, a top-notch faculty of 394 professors, a new medical school, more than 6,000 students, and a winning football team. In only eight years, it had risen in size from 88th in the nation to 20th, and it was the 11th largest state university in the nation. Long financed these improvements by arranging for the state to purchase acreage from the old LSU campus, which adjoined the grounds of the new State Capitol building in downtown Baton Rouge. To the consternation of his critics, Long essentially diverted $9 million for LSU's expansion and increased the annual operating budget to $2.8 million." LSU Office of Communications

Not to mention burned entire cities during the war...

Don't really disagree with this. Perhaps we should substitute Claire Chennault for Sherman on the original list.

My opinion is that the ROTC building should be named Sherman-Chennault Hall...
Keep in mind Sherman maintained an interest in LSU and besides donating personal items and books from his personal library, he was the one who gave the Pentagon Barracks to LSU when the Army left Baton Rouge...so don't say he didn't do anything....
Hell we have a street named for Raphael Semmes, besides being the Captain of the CSS Alabama, taught at LSU for a year of so....and a dorm named for Kirby-Smith, who I have absolutely no idea what his connection is with LSU....

As a graduate of the LSU ROTC Advanced Program (i.e., I got an Infantry officer commission in 1969--scary, huh?), I know that building well, and naming it after Chennault and Sherman would be the ultimate in damning with faint praise.

Sherman not only founded the university, he used his personal funds to buy books for the library. He probably did more for LSU in a year than Jindal has done in four.
There should be a Sherman statue on campus, or at least a building named for him (even if it is the ROTC building). He's one of the greatest military leaders our nation has ever produced and has an international reputation. It's time to get over losing the war and honor our history.
Since the Army and Air Force ROTC detachments share the building, I could live with Sherman-Chennault Hall, even though Claire only attended for a year and didn't graduate. If the Army Air Force had listened to him and what he was saying about escort fighters, we might not have lost so many bomber crewmen during WWII. Plus both guys are really interesting characters.

Hey! Think about it! Without Sherman, we never would have had Shaq, you know?

Let's start here. The statue could have Sherman holding a torch with a real natural gas-fired flame. Put the statued next to a Tiger Stadium wall with a mosaic of Atlanta burning in the background.

there is a great deal of truth to your statement (Field Artillery - 1975)---although the building is in better shape than in years past it'd be nice to relocate ROTC to a renovated Huey Long Fieldhouse....guess I really have to get moving on the tank....worked on it a couple of years back, I could get a M-60 or an Abrams really easy, but Shermans were a bit hard to come by...I can only hope with the next round of base closures I can come up with one....

Old War Skule, engage.
You could put T.H. Middleton on the statue list, too, even though he already has a library: Middleton
