Auburn Fans: Is it true that they are leaning towards keeping Chiz?

I just talked to my brother. He said that Philip Marshall and a local radio guy were saying that the administration has indicated that is likely that Chizik will be retained.
Has anyone heard anything similar? Thoughts?

Nobody including PM knows so any answer you get is incorrect.

I don't have a dog in this hunt but winless in the SEC is a major statement as to where your program is and is heading. However, there are a lot of factors to consider - specifically who they have alreay reached out to and who has shown interest. If they have a big fish on the line I have to think Chiz is gone.

I don't know if you can trust that. I've heard that about Dooley throughout the season.

I could not agree more.

I think PM's source is Jacobs. He's towing the company line, like always.

Chiz will not be back next year, I will murder my cat and put it on youtube if he is.

I feel fairly certain that Chizik has a less than 20% chance of returning (something crazy could always happen).
This talk from Marshall is just him communicating something he's been told. Phillip knows AU. He knows Chiz isn't coming back, but he's been told that Chiz might. He was told this for a reason - so that he would begin to float it out there. It's one of two things:
1) trial balloon. put it out there, monitor the reaction/appetite for it.
2) (most likely scenario) not making the headway they'd like with the conversations with agents for the possible replacements. AU likely told those agents something to the effect of "we don't have to make the change. we might keep him". Then they needed to have this in the media to add legitimacy to the claim. It's stupid, but not unbelievable considering how AU has handled this thus far. The people they are talking to aren't only considering AU. This strategy would work better if they were only considering staying at their current job or going to AU. AU is looking at coaches with options. This strategy - if it is the case - is foolish.

13, in scenario 2 which i agree, AU is obviously aiming very high. We have to. Bama did. Its not foolish to try until its been show to not work. Then its foolish.

I'm not going to speculate on the reasoning because with our leadership, anything is possible. I do agree 100% with Marshall being told to float this out there. He's the media mouthpiece for Jacobs and crew.

Let me clarify. I'm not saying it is foolish to aim high. It is wise to aim high. It is foolish to think you are going to "scare" those candidates by floating out that you're willing to walk away and just stay with Chiz. Everyone in the coaching and agent communities knows that AU has begun conversations - including Chizik. They (the candidate's agents) aren't going to buy AU's bluff of "well we might just keep him". Those agents will say "fine. we've got several other opportunities to consider".
See my point?

Yes, it is foolish of AU and the media to think keeping Chiz scares anyone.
I'd rather AU aim high and lose a bunch than start a search at WKU and Ark St.
Ppl want to laugh at some of the names but it hurts nobody to make Bob Stoops, Jeff Fisher, Jimbo, blah blah blah to say no.
If you dont ask, you cant get a yes.

At the absolute earliest, we're 11 days away from an official announcement... all info coming out of people like Marshall is next to useless.
In all honesty, the smokescreens that have come out of AUC have been extremely laughable... the Lousville OC and now this idea that we'd keep GC... no even remotely believable.

at best he has to hire a new OC, a real one that can actually coach shite.

scenario 3- Lower expectations from the fanbase to make a lesser hire more appealing

this has happened for every coaching hire in the last 10 years outside of Saban at Bama, Meyer at Florida and OSU, and maybe Notre Dame getting Brian Kelly?
Fans from every school have this expectation that an already established, elite coach is going to just jump ship to their school. And, it is just not very likely to happen at all.

Very true... the circumstances have to aline in order to get a proven HC that everyone's excited about... bottom line is most very good HCs are in stable positions making a lot of money.

This would possibly go hand-in-hand with scenario 2. not hearing what you want from the top targets so recognizing that you are going to the next group of candidates. Trying to make that group more appealing than keeping Chiz.
I think there is a 4th scenario that is the least likely, but still has a heartbeat nonetheless. Perhaps Jacobs is telling some AU decision makers that they aren't hearing what they want from agents in order to justify keeping Chiz (which is his preference anyway). He did tell the board that Texas would come after Chiz when Mack retires "in 2 years" and that's why they needed to give chiz a $10M buyout.
