re: Anyone think the coaches are a bit clueless when it comes to Shepard?

I'm sorry but anyone who thinks he could have been any good at QB anywhere is kidding themselves.
I'd say denard Robinson is a pretty terrible passer and Shep isn't even on his level
Dont have to be even a decent passer to be a decent college QB. Pat White was one of the most electrifying QBs in the last decade and the dude was clueless throwing it downfield to anyone but a wide open guy. In the right offense like a Rich Rod/Pat White offense, he could have excelled.

Yea, Oregon's QBs under chip has actually been pretty good passers. They are more runners second if anything.

Then he disappeared
And Alfred Blue, Kenny Hilliard and Jeremy Hill appeared.
When we weren't converting on third and running 60 plays a game, someone is left out, and it is the niche player.

I agree that he was underutilized or whatever, but if he could catch balls that hit him right in the hands, he would have had a decent impact on some games.
Which IMO goes on the coaches for moving him to a position he clearly cant play. Remember when they tried to make Trindon a WR? At least they didn't give up giving him the ball out of the backfield like they did with shepard.

Keep in mind our offense struggled most of last year and this year until the last couple weeks. What happened in that time frame? Shepard's carries disappeared.
Sometimes big plays can help spark things. If there's 1 thing teams have not had to worry about at all against LSU the last 2 seasons it's a big play threat.

how do you know this? did you spend a lot of time watching their high school tapes? Denard was very successful under Rich Rod's offense.

Did you hear the tape after the game of les telling strud they need give shep more touches? It was like a running joke with them!

I actually agree with you on the carries. I'd love to see Shep touch the ball at least 5 times a game.
But there are a lot of kids that play QB in high school, then covert to WR in college. Rueben Randle made that position changed just find. So I don't blame the coaches for putting him in a position he never played before.

Just baffles me they cant figure him out.
it appears he is jack of all trades and the master of none at this level. of course, it is the coaches fault.

Quite possibly the most under-utilized player in the history of LSU football - considering the hype and talent he had entering college. Fact is he was too under-sized for running back and not good enough hands for go-to wide receiver. Very skilled with the ball in his hands. I don't get it either.
Yes! Some guys don't have a specific position, they are just "football players." Shepard is one of those guys. All the LSU coaching staff had to do in order to figure out how to utilize Shepard was turn on the 2008 & 2009 Ole Miss game tape and watch Dexter McCluster. He was a guy who didn't necessarily have a position, but they found a way to get him the ball all the time. He lined up in the both slot and outside at WR. He took snaps as a QB and was a threat to run or pass. He lined up at RB, as well as returned punts and kicks. Many times he was Ole Miss's only threat on offense, yet he made play after play!
Yes, LSU may have had better talent than Ole Miss at most of the traditional skill positions, but I think we'd all agree that LSU's offense wasn't exactly a juggernaut in 2009 & 2010. Certainly a little creativity in getting the ball in Shepard's hands couldn't have hurt

Randle played WR also in high school, a good deal actually.
Shepard never played WR in his life, and it was quite evident years ago he wasn't cut out for the position.

I'm always amazed at how much the fanbase overrates his talent.
He's fast, but nowhere near elite speed. We've seen him get walked down from behind at least 3 times in the last 2+ seasons, often on big plays that could have been even better.
He can't seem to stay on his feet. I know JJ underthrew him at Bama last year, but a good athlete should have been able to bend down and get the ball, and stay up and get in the end zone. And then the 2 deep balls from Mett early this year where he caught them, and then literally tripped over his own feet while trying to run downfield.
He can make one cut in a run, but that's it and he can't change direction worth a damn.
Basically he's a slower version of Trindon, and the only reason Trindon was ever effective at all was his ridiculous speed. Shep was way overrated out of HS, and that's the only reason we're all moaning about his lack of utilization 4 years later.

He's at the wrong school. He should be a QB somewhere.
Not if he's interested in the NFL.
He's just not good enough to get reps at LSU. Who are you going to take reps from? Hill? Landry? OBJ? Ware?

One Star and glad this is his last year and will not have to hear about him anymore!!

No more than clueless fans

Good point. I would rather throw more to Ware.
Although...I wouldn't mind seeing Shep get some of Ware's carries.

Hard to blame the coaches when Shep never figured out how to run routes or catch the football.
Have you watched any games this season?
