LSU's Biggest Bust... Russell Shepherd?

National High School Player of the year... Is he just overrated or have we failed to find a niche for him? I don't get how he's been so unproductive.

I don't know how people can say he's overrated, Les has misused the frick out of him.

Chris Pettaway, #1 offensive lineman in the country in 1985. Signed with LSU, was here four years and literally never played a down in meaningful action.

I'd take Shepard over Loston any day tbh. Let's not forget Davenport and other 5*s that just didn't pan out.

frick no. He touches the ball out the backfield and slips through the SMALLEST of holes. Gets a touch and scores a TD. I have no IDEA why he doesn't get more touches. What a fricking waste.

And Shep has been a good citizen, done everything that was asked of him, and contributed on the field. He's not a bust, IMNSHO.

Russell Shepherd should have been used as he was the other night . What we used to call a scatback . His presence in the backfield would have given DC's problems trying to defend him . Much like Reggie Bush was used in New Orleans . I for one would have loved to see him on screen plays and getting into the open field . Russell has been misused his entire time here in my opinion .

Seems like a good kid, good football player and good student. However, he also seems to be without question the most overrated recruit ever signed by LSU. Having said that, watch, he'll wind up playing on Sundays for someone and make us all look like jerks.

Put him on Oregon, WVU, Clemson, Auburn (under Gus).. and he would light people up.

I'm not a coach and realize they know what they are doing.. but I just don't see why RS is not a focal point punt returns and kick off returns. I suppose he's just not great or has fumbling concerns or something.. but we are really struggling in the return department.

@ bmy you hit the nail on the head my brother. Shep would be a star on those teams.

Les Miles has a morbid case of the Mack Brown syndrome: highly optimized recruiting capabilities, but followed by lackluster development abilities.

Averaged over 7 yards per carry for his career. I would call that pretty productive. His problem is that he just hasn't gotten the chances. Misused.

Please, if you are goin to start a fairly negative thread about a player spell his name right. If you aren't sure, look it up.
I don't think he's been a bust. He was a running QB that wasn't going to be successful at that position in the SEC. He needs coaching at the WR spot, but when he gets the ball in open space, he is elusive and can make a big play.
We recruited him as a number 1 QB coming out of highschool, I am willing to bet if you put some of the other running QBs in CFB right now at WR, they aren't going to be lighting it up either. He has been a good leader and an excellent representative for LSU with his personality and his ability to help recruiting with the class he came in with. That class over 4 years is 40-9 with a good chance to finsih out at 44-9 and 4 of those losses came when they were freshmen. Outstanding class and he was a big part of it.
IMO, not a bust, just a different type of success for the program.

Very original thread, don't think this has ever really been touched on.
Over-rated no, misused probably so. All in all one of my favorite tigers of all time on and off the field.
