While trying my hand at this snapping turtle business I found this on one of my lines. If looks like a snapping turtle or something else mashed it up pretty good.

Catching any turtles?
I'm surprised the eel was still on the line. You must check your lines regularly.
Turtles would have eaten that eel.

I have had absolutely no luck catching turtles! I used a line about 6 or 7 ft long with a weight on the end and another in the middle, and hooks about every foot.
I baited with chicken liver the first time and had nothing on any of my five lines. The second time I baited with chicken hearts and the eel is all I caught. I only had three lines the second time because somebody cut two of them!
Any advice?

Try wrapping and hooking as much of a strip of breakfast bacon that you can get on a 1/0 worm hook. Works for me in my pond... I put the baited hook right at the edge of the bank in the water where the bream can't get to it, but the snapper can.

red Xs, but "congo eel" is generally amphiuma. Are there tiny little feet up front?

Used to cath them in Bayou Robert. They loved hollows in the base of Willow trees.

Hubby still does...he feeds them to the mud snake. The kids get excited because they're all old enough now to go with him amphiuma-hunting & they get to shine the flashlights for him. (He goes at night after it rains.)
