Who Calls for Plays to Be Reviewed?

I recognize this is totally nitpicking a thoroughly dominant performance on each side of the ball, but....
Why didn't we challenge the incompletion thrown to Shepard in the endzone with 5 minutes left in the 2nd qtr? We were only up 17-3 at that point and had all 3 timeouts remaining. I'm not saying the refs made a mistake on the call, but it seemed like it was worth burning the 1st of 3 timeouts before halftime.
I know. I'm butthurt, have sand in my vagina, etc. Fire away, rantards!

Please spare us the imagery, but I mentioned this in a RS thread elsewhere. It seems that reviews are subject to the whimsy of whoever...

Then when the hell do you do it?

Because it's a legitimate question.

Pretty sure there is someone watching replay

Thanks for replying. Threads move fast the day after a game.
It seems like someone up in the booth should be responsible. It just seems like we could manage that detail a little better.

I don't know but I can only assume the guys that make that decision figured it was incomplete because the receiver must maintain possesion and the play doesn't end the instant he hits the ground if he has only just got the ball in his hands.

EVERY SINGLE PLAY in college football is reviewed.
It was NOT a TD. You have to control the ball through the entire act of making the catch. He lost it the moment he hit the ground.

It seemed fairly similar to Early Doucet's catch against ASU in 2005. In Shep's case, the ball looked like the ground caused the ball to pop loose.
Still, it looked worthy of calling for a review. If nothing else, it could have boosted Shep's confidence a bit. I absolutely hate seeing him struggle, with all he's done to promote LSU to recruits.

I disagree. He was on his back before the ball came loose. Not saying he should not have held it "all the way", but I think it was a catch. And, no official review.

It would be real easy to criticize what I'm going to say, but eh, frick it, I'm a grown man an know that 99% of the board will disagree with this:
If we're preaching to our players total domination on both sides of the ball, shouldn't the coaches be as aggressive with reviewing plays? It just seemed like the staff took the play off on that one.
I'm wearing body armor, so feel free to tell me what an overanalytical douche I am.

So you are saying that anywhere else on the field that was a catch ?
If that was a Washington or Bama receiver, was it still a catch ? I already know the answer.

I honestly don't know if it was a catch, but it was definitely reviewable.

The ground didn't even cause the fumble because he was already laying on his back on the ground when the ball finally came loose. It should have been reviewed, but I felt that it evened out on the lateral no call.

Ummmmm. Yes. And your answer is wrong. Show me in the NCAA rule book or find another thread to annoy.

Show me in the NCAA rule book
1.Be sure Player has FIRM Control of Ball for ENTIRE PLAY for it to be a CATCH, (Control Established after player makes a Move or is Tackled Immediately in Possession). WHEN IN DOUBT, WIPE IT OUT.
2. If Player clearly Controls Ball in the air and is Firmly in possession, then Player touches the ground and continues to secure possession of the Ball or Nose of Ball touches ground, yet Player retains his firm control of Ball and it does not Move during this action, the Process of the CATCH is not interrupted, so it is a CATCH.
3. On a Simultaneous CATCH, RULE Survival of the Fittest, whoever has Ball at End of Process will Have Possession.
4. If a Player has a “Tippy-toe” stance on the Sideline or End line either from returning to the ground or on the ground after establishing Firm Control, the Player must maintain that stance for the duration for it to be a CATCH. If the Toe touches inbounds, but the Heel touches out of bounds, RULE INCOMPLETE.
5. If Player turns after a Catch? And Ball is not secure or SEEMS secure and/or player is moving ball for possession, and CONTACT is made and Ball becomes loose- RULE INCOMPLETE.
6. If Player, whether airborne or not, makes a Catch in Field of Play or the End Zone, is immediately hit or immediately goes to ground (In or Out of Bounds) and looses possession – RULE INCOMPLETE.
*****7. If Airborne Player makes a Catch and contacts ground in the Field of Play or the End Zone and Ball becomes loose – RULE INCOMPLETE.
8. No Cheap Fumbles. The ground cannot cause a fumble, BUT the ground can cause an incompletion as illustrated in #6 and #7. A Player must maintain possession during the entire process for it to be a CATCH.*****

Incomplete pass
To further answer the question: if the replay official decides not to stop play and formally review the play, a coach can challenge.
