the death of Bo Rein plays a major part in this. Set the program back 20 years probably
Rein dies. Stovall hired as emergency. Stovall was a great recruiter- the rest meh
Broadhead comes in and cans Stovall, bringing in Arnsbarger who was a fine coach, did not like the recruiting part of CFB
BA wanted to become AD at LSU. Power play between those two results in Archer. good man, decent DC but too young at the time. Wasn't a bad hire, most agreed with keeping that mid 80s run going.
LA was different then as well. The rules did not assist LSU or Archer.
Hallman's hiring was suppose to be about "discipline"....remember the put your earrings in a box and send them to mama crap???
Hallman was the worst coach in LSU history, hired by the cheapest AD in history.
He actually thought he deserved a 5th year. Thank goodness only 50k showed for his last home game and they pulled the plug.
Dinardo did good things but was too micro-manager kind style and did not delegate well.
all these guys came cheap. LSU started winning when money was loosened up but all of the nonsense would not have occurred if Rein had lived. He was THE hot head coach and was a great pick by Dietzel. Too bad we never got to see him make LSU the program that it is today.
I've always felt if Bo had lived, those 20 years would have been so different....1980-2000.....20 years of crazy and bad decisions
The fact that this is an accurate CHAIN OF EVENTS (and I'm not really disputing that it is), does not mean Bo Rein's death CAUSED the demise of the LSU football program in the 90s.

1. Hiring Archer (no head coaching experience) over Darth Visor (who had just lead DUKE to an ACC title!).
2. Hiring 1 of the 3 Stooges who had modest success @USM mostly due to presence of a future Hall of Fame QB.
3. Hiring a guy who never managed a winning season @ Vandy but still was considered a long-term solution along w/ his "drop LB" pyramid scam-loving Def. Coordinator.

I think faneca was from Houston.
He was from the New Orleans area. His family moved to Houston when he was in high school, I believe.
I want to say, he actually played two years at a school in New Orleans -- was it Rummel or Bro Martin maybe?

LSU was never going to hire Steve, he was unproven at the time and the players along with Bill wanted Archer.
Darth Visor had spent a few yrs @ Duke, winning the ACC in '89. Also, he head-coached 3 yrs in the USFL before that.

Archer and Curley had enough talent to win period. Archer's era had no real leaders as players and the coaches didn't step in and try to positively affect team chemistry and Curley was just an absolute drunken redneck with no real coaching skills.

Not a response to Bayou_Bengal and I didn't read pages 1-5, but the info on pp. 6 & 7 is spot-on.
Just depends on how far back do you want to go to answer "what caused . . ." I mean we had a parade of inept coaches (Archer, Curley, DiNardo). But 'why' did we have a parade of inept coaches? We had an inept AD (Dean) and there were some unfortuaate events (Rein tragedy) that also are factors.

Curley was just awful. DiNardo started to get things going, but he hired Lou Tepper as defensive coordinator and our defense under Sweet Lou was abysmal. DiNardo never recovered.

I agree that more than any other single factor that determined his fate at LSU was hiring/retaining Tepper.
Some other non-insignificant factors:
1) Faneca leaving early after '97. '98 was supposed to have been a banner year. We had so many close games in '98 where a play or series would have made a difference.
2) Losing Cecil Collins - a real difference maker.
3) Losing OC Morris Watts and not replacing him.

WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG
Spurrier first season at Duke was THE SAME YEAR ARCHER STARTED AT LSU! He shared the ACC title in 1989, his LAST year at Duke.

oh, that hurts. the interception game was a national, international, global and universal embarrassment. i totally gave up on lsu football.
but, then dinardo brought back the magic.
we are only in heaven b/c we went thru hell, therefore, be grateful for everything.

Oh the other player Archer lost out on was Baron Jackson, my high school English teacher's son, who went to Pitt.
Ended up at Southern then his wife killed him. What a tragic waste.

Technically - just less than four years? Didn't like Hal Hunter coach the last game of the '99 season vs Arky (whom we trounced to improve to 3-8)?

or another coach with an Italian name whose name escapes me (coached Cleveland at one point.)

Oh, sorry. I thought you were talking about Hallman. DiNardo coached on game shy of five seasons. He was canned after the U of H debacle.

What caused LSU Football's putrid 90's run?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Hiring Archer (no head coaching experience) over Darth Visor (who had just lead DUKE to an ACC title!).
Wrong, Steve was hire in 1987 by Duke. It was 1989 when Steve lead Duke to a tied ACC champions with a 8-4 record
2. Hiring 1 of the 3 Stooges who had modest success @USM mostly due to presence of a future Hall of Fame QB.
Yes and Hallman did not even recruit the plyer.
3. Hiring a guy who never managed a winning season @ Vandy but still was considered a long-term solution along w/ his "drop LB" pyramid scam-loving Def. Coordinator.
Joe said at the time why hire a coach for 1 million a year when I can save LSU 500K a year, hiring a coach for 500k.

How many LSU fans on here were at that game in person or listening on the radio?
Top 5 and in the storied history of LSU football.
