i wouldnt publicly brag about distilling. ATF might pay you a visit.

In all likelihood you probably wouldn't get in trouble, but I'd advise you RA to get this thread deleted.

Not illegal to talk about it. Maybe I'll edit.

I don't distill at home, but come on, the government should have better things to do with their time than hassle people making small batches of hooch in their homes.

aint the alcohol, it is the bomb that you have created with no professional training or oversight.

This is a little freaky.

No, it's the alcohol. You can get a permit for home distillation of ethanol. Same process different product.

Actually it is the same product. It's just what you do with the ethanol after the fact. no one is triple distilling or ageing ethanol in oak to put it in their engines.

What are you talking about? A still is not a meth lab.

I was under the impression that 1 gal was legal, but if you bought equipment the seller (store) is required to file your name and info with the ATF? So they could prehaps popin for a visit? anyone else heard of this.
I do have a friend that made one out of glass wear, but the smell is really bad.

Owning a still is perfectly legal to own a still because making distilled water and perfume is fine. Making alcohol is illegal unless you have the right permits.

I would guess more years than you were on the ball my family was making liqour on the stove. It is a matter of heating at one end and cooling at the other. I have had the pleasure of of shine in South Carolina that would make you breathe fire.

quote:no, perfectly legal to buy one, and the ingredients. I would assume you would have to be caught in the act making or trying to sell the shite to get in any trouble.

I can also buy soil and poppy seeds. I'm one step away from opium.
One would probably never get caught if you did it on the DL. It's all about risk reduction, which begins with not posting on a public forum. Distilling alcohol for human consumption is illegal. No loopholes. No 1 gallon limits. No nothing. Illegal.
The ATF doesn't give two shits that you are making something that is combustible. All they care about is the tax revenue, and they care a lot about that.
As a sidenote, when one submits for a license for ethanol fuel production, one agrees to have their property searched at any time for anything and their books audited to prove the fuel went where it was supposed to go. So if you think you can get away with it by going the ethanol permit route, think again.

I guess I was misinformed about the explosive nature of the stills.
Figured it was more than just financial since beer and wine making is legal. I guess though that those two are harder to frick up and kill yourself with.

You can go blind from the methanol byproduct of ethanol right?
That aint safe.

Yeah, the tax revenue doesn't hold much water with me. You can make beer with ease and legally. I'm sure they do care about revenue, but there seems to be a health risk factor that is much bigger.
