So now that we walked away from the house, we're thinking of building...

from the ground up. We really liked some design elements of the property we had. Some we didn't.
But I'm wondering what I'd spend right now if I bid out the entire thing. I do not-repeat do NOT-have the time to dedicate to overseeing the process but I'd love to get a custom home.
Approx 1400SFLA w/a 2 car carport, perhaps a half-acre lot at best. I'm wondering what I can expect to pay on a cost/sf basis.
Also, does anyone have really good experience with an inexpensive, quality home builder in the BR area they have personal experience with of any type?

I've heard good things about DSLD if you're wanting inexpensive. Your home won't be completely custom but you can pick out your paint colors, brick, flooring, granite, cabinets, etc. I walked in their model home in Denham and it's nice. I think TigerTatorTots on here used them to build his house and a guy I work with had one built by them. He loves his so far. I think the ones in that subdivision in Denham were less than $100 per square foot including the lot.

Like anything else, you get what you pay for. My last house was $89/ft2 and that included the lot. Didn't really have any problems with the house, it was in a planned community and we got to change a few things on the plans. The house I am finishing now ended up being $138/ft2 and it is a custom, from the ground up.

Saw DSLD's website. Looks like they build in neighborhoods or planned communities. I'd like a rural piece of land somewhere out in LP but we'll see.
Thanks for the advice.

Steer clear from DSLD. They are about as non-custom as it gets. They won't even install a ceiling fan if you desired one. Its their way or the highway.

we looked at building, the cost of getting a loan for the build is sick. Most banks, even the local community banks, want you to put down 20% of the estimated value of the home. if you are looking to spend 150,000, the home would need to be valued at more than that, and would cost you at least a 30,000 down payment, in which you only make interest payments for until the build is finished. once that happens, you have to roll that over into a mortgage, which means closing twice!

That's 100% false.

DSLD would work fine if you were to build a basic house.
