New age limit for 2016 olympic basketball

I'm editing the original post I made here referring to an SI article saying that, for the 2016 Olympics, there might be a new age limit of 23 for basketball.
I apologize for not posting the link to the article. I tried to find it and couldn't on first search but found an article that addressed the topic in much more detail. Link below. It appears that this is an NBA idea, not an Olympic one, meaning, only the USA would be subject to it, not other countries. If that's the case, I'm definitely against it.

This is stupid.
If that happens, they are bound not to win the gold again at some point and the heat will be back on to get the best players for the next olympics.
This cycle has happened twice within the last 25 years.

Really sucks for the players that are really good just not a spot for them yet that would make the team in 16 but will be to old by a year or two

That's what, I'm saying.
We have twice seen the reinvigoration of "frick you we are USA" basketball.
1992 after the 88 bronze
2008 after the 2004 bronze

i'm confused by the OP and we need a damn link...is it a 23 age limit for ONLY USA or the whole world? because the way the first sentence in the OP is worded, sounds like an entire olympics age limit

It's going to be only for the USA. No way the rest of the world would agree to that because it's one of the few precious times that they can showcase their stars.

Yeah, they had to play with a ball made of ice and on ice skates. The Norwegians took the gold from the Finnish in a thrilling affair.

An 23 and under US team would still be pretty badass right now with Durant, Love, Westbrook, Griffin, Harden, Davis, Cousins, Irving, Wall, Monroe. A little weak at the 2/3 but would destroy any other country's under 23 team.
Still not nearly as interesting as a team with Kobe, Lebron, CP3, etc. It would be really fricking stupid IMO.

But they wouldn't be playing another countries U-23 team.

Ah I thought it would be imposed for all countries. I would be legit pissed off if the US was the only country to do it. Absolutely no reason for it.

Which is why they are bound to not bring home the gold eventually and when that happens we will be back to where we were in 1992 and 2008 – assembling our best players and beating the frick out of everyone to prove out dominance.

American NBA players don't sign different contracts than foreign NBA players.
If the NBA accomplishes what it wants, no NBA players over 23 would be playing in the Olympics. Obviously the rules wouldn't apply to Spaniards playing in Spain, Greeks playing in Italy, etc. So the Spanish, Greek, and Australian teams would be weakened less by the rules by than the Americans, but everyone would be sending sub-optimal teams, except for the countries that have no NBA players to start with (Tunisia, Angola, etc).
And in theory, the FIBA World Cup will be the true championship, and it would run after the soccer World Cup on the calendar year, every 4 years. Stern wants to make Olympic basketball as meaningless as Olympic soccer, which shouldn't even be an event anymore.
There are a lot of scenarios possible, and no sportswriter has chosen to explore them yet. I guess they prefer doing mindless shite like arguing about whether LeBron can close without using any advanced statistics.

I was talking about the perceived superstars playing in the EuroSuperleague.

Right, that would still be a problem for the US, but a Spain team withuot Ibaka, either Gasol, Rubio, Rudy Fernandez, and maybe another player or two doesn't look that dangerous, right?
Sure they would have Sergio Rodriguez, Raul Lopez, and Juan Carlos Navarro (a great player), but I think the American U-23 squad could handle them.
The discrepancies would be even worse for Turkey, France, and Germany without their NBA players.

I'm not saying that the US would never have a chance at a gold again. In fact, they would likely be the favorite every time, but a young team like that leads the opening for a slip-up against a veteran team. If that were to happen, we would be back to square one where we have to call on our best players to restore basketball order.

This is how Olympic men's soccer works except with an allowance of three overage players in each roster. It started as a compromise between FIFA and the IOC to insure that the World Cup remained the best international competition every four years. It also extended when professional clubs complained about losing their best young players during the first weeks of the season, in addition to the possibility of fatigue and injury. This is essentially the NBA's argument in this matter. Playing for Argentina worsened Manu Ginobili's persistant injuries.
It still makes Olympic soccer entertaining, because some of the best players in the world are under 23. Messi's current peak began when he won the gold medal with Argentina in 2008.
Olympic basketball would remain competitive with the American team remaining the overwhelming favorites. It might actually make it into a less imbalanced tournament. I love seeing the US win, but it'd be nice to see an actual competitive game featuring them every once in awhile. (Athens 2004 and 2006 World Championships debacles notwithstanding.)
