Never owned anything nicer than a riveted flat with motors that may/may not run. Although those led a few interesting nights, i'm married with kids now so I need to upgrade.
I want to fish both fresh/inshore saltwater and would like to get the best boat for the value - I dont care to spend 30k. I've been looking at a few bay boats (xpress, nautic star), but want the opionion of the OB.

Can we get a size and price range?

17-20 ft.
Up to 25k - I may be in over my head - it's hard to guage prices online. I saw xpress had these around 20k.

Expresses are nice boats. That might be your best bet. If you can find a used bay bolt witha low hour engine on it thats another good route to go.

My dad has a 19ft express at our lakehouse that he uses for bass fishing. It is a really nice boat. I'm just not into bass boats though; I wish he wouldn't have sold our 22ft Cape Horn bay boat

If you are doing mostly fresh water express is prob your best bet.

My friend's who have Blazer Bay boats like them. Very utilitarian, drafts a bit more than the competitors but you won't have to read the conditions quite like they will. The 21 would be nice and a barely used one would be right in your price range.

I'm about to order me a Gatortail. Takes care of fishing, hunting, crabbing, frogging, etc

Are there any sites out there (like turecar or kelly blue book for cars) for boats?
How much neg. room do dealers keep for new boats? I know it probably varies, but i have no clue and that's not a good positon to be when looking.

Geauxt, what does the 1910 run? I can see the 1810 listed for 20k.

1910 with a 115 should be right at 25-26. most storage i've seen on a boat that size hands down

The question you need to answer for yourself is what kind of fishing are you going to be doing the most of.
Inshore marshes and fresh with only the occasional venture into the gulf or large bays/lakes then i'd go aluminum all day long.
If you plan on having any significant time crossing open water or in the gulf then you had better get fiberglass if you don't wanna get beat to death in a little chop and soaked on top of that.

I'm northeast of Houston, but lived in the Baton Rouge area for quite awhile.
I saw there was a dealer in Sulphur. Might check them out along with xpress.

If your budget is 25k max then you are either gonna have to look at smaller boats or used boats.
Don't be fooled by the sticker prices for boat motor and trailer such as the Nautic Star 1910 for example will run you around 25k with a 115 fourstroke and trailer. But that won't include your electronics, tax, title, and registration. That stuff ads a sizeable chunk to your final bill.
