The wife tells me to buy a new scope for my bday that was last week and a new rifle for V-Day. What says the OB. I have heard good things about the Marlin X7 series. Looking for a.243, .308 or 7MAG, but I could be convinced otherwise. Gonna put a Nion Pro Staff on top. What say you. Keep it under $800 total

.308, .30-06, or .270 cannot be beat.
For the rifle, how much do you want to spend???
Look at the tikka's. Ive shot several in various calibers and they were all sub-MOA, and some were same-hole-every-shot.

Look at Tikka and Savage. .308, .30-06, or .270. IMO

I would seriously look at the Weatherby Vanguard S2. It is the Howa 1500 made for Weatherby. It is Sub MOA at 100 yds. The rifle shoots sweet. I have one in 300 WinMag. I put a Zeiss Conquest on it for $400 - BassPro or Academy. It is a better scope than the Nikon ProStaff for sure.
Estimate of Weatherby/Zeiss Rig:
Rifle $450
Scope $400
Rings $70
Sling $30

I had a chance to handle a Savage .308 with an accutrigger and accustock. Holy shite that is a nice trigger pull and a nice gun. I think I found my next rifle!

I couldn't get over all of the Plastic on the bolt and the magazine. It just didn't feel sturdy or well made when I held it. The price is absolutely right. Same with a Savage w/ muzzle brake.

I have a Tikka T3 in 270 WSM and a Savage Weather Warrior in 300 Win Mag. You won't be disappointed in either in 7mm Mag. The Tikka is going to kick harder, but it's also very nice to carry because it is so light. It has a really good factory trigger, and is extremely accurate out of the box... As for the Savage, the accutrigger is awesome, also extremely accurate, and it doesn't kick as bad as the Tikka. My dad's 7mm Mag Tikka kicks harder than my Savage 300 Win Mag, but if you can't handle either, you're frail, a pussy, or both. The Tikka costs me like $600 and the Savage was $735.

I agree, those are great rounds. I would also include 7mm-.08. Thats the next gun I plan to purchase.

What are you shooting at with those?

You need at least a 7mag to kill deer you wuss.

Frail, pussy or both?
This is what I don't think many people understand about magnum rifles. It's not that you can absorb the recoil and walk away with all your teeth, it's that you can absorb the recoil and make a 300-500+ yd shot.
It's kind of a catch 22. To be good enough to utilize a "magnum" you have to shoot a lot. That gets tough on your wallet as well as your shoulder.

I was joking there. I have killed with 243, 270, 7mm Mag, 270 WSM, 308, and 300 win mag. The deer were all equally dead when I got to them... But that particular day that we were shooting pumpkins, we were shooting at 530 yards.
