JL deserves to be the starter but to win 14 games Mettenberger's abilities will be needed, esp. if JL goes down.
Jefferson is the 3rd best - maybe 4th counting Rivers - passer on this team. Jesus, he might only be the 3rd best duel threat QB on the team. I am definitely confident in saying he is at best the 7th best runner on this team.
Serious Question: Exactly how does all this translate into his 'abilities will be needed' for LSU to win 14 games this year?

Serious Answer: Without a crystal ball to foresee the future, no one knows whether or not Jefferson will be "needed" at some point this season. The issue, therefore, is whether it is better to have him and not need him or need him and not have him. Is Mettenberger any more ready to play a tough SEC schedule this year than Lee was in 2008? Maybe he is. Maybe not.
Also, as has been noted many times, LSU players love Les Miles and play for him. Perhaps one reason for this is that he cares about them as people and wants them to succeed. Some coaches might just discard a player who screwed up like Jefferson did here. Les Miles seems like the kind of coach who will give players a chance to redeem themselves. If Miles just threw him under the bus and offered no hope of redemption (in football terms), perhaps he would lose a lot of the faith and good will of many of his players he has worked so hard to build up over the years.
