Yes, if the experience was truly awful, I'd do that. If it's cold soup, I'd give them a chance to fix it. But it takes a lot to get to the truly awful stage. And at that point, I really don't care if they rectify it. I just don't want to pay for it. Period.
You're acting like I'm being unfair to them. Yet you think the waitress should be fired, which is way worse than eating a 100 dollar meal.

Thats my fault...I should have specified that I was operating under the assumption that this consistently happens...
If you had actually been to the restaurant that this thread is actually about, you would realize that most of those issues were on her....the place is small...really small.

Let me re-phrase, a customer should have "the balls" to complain to a manager before backdooring a restaurant by calling a credit card company.
Also, there is a 90% chance that your credit card company ended up eating that $100 not the restaurant.

Just for the sake of discussion, if you have a truly awful experience, why exactly do you owe them any courtesy when you presumably have been shown none for the better part of an hour?

Maybe you have never owned or managed I business...an owner or manager should be given an option to rectify a situation one of his employees created. At very minimum, it would provide him information he needs to better run the business that he pours his time, love and sweat into.
Nothing would piss me off more than someone walking out of my restaurant with no feedback calling a credit card company to get his money back.

I highly doubt that a diligent owner/manager hasn't had prior complaints and is unaware of customer service issues. Rarely does truly awful service happen in a vacuum. I would think it's most likely to happen when the manager doesn't value service. Clearly, there's exceptions to that.

But I'm curious - a quick look at your post history shows you've talked about this terrible experience at Pinetta's in numerous threads....but without ever elaborating on what happened. Care to share the details?

Sorry, TA, but that's not the case. Every section of their personnel didn't handle things properly at all - the kitchen, the wait staff and the manager.
But if you want to call the waitress the star of the horror show, I guess that'll work.

Still stands. If you find a pube in your pudding, and eat it anyway...you pay for it.
You see, we are just hearing one side of the story. I wasn't there, so I don't know what happened. Warning flags went up when he said it took 20 mins to get drinks, and he's been comped for that kind of thing before.
Seems like 20 mins in a meal is a little early for the word 'comp' to even come up.
Items from the menu were ordered, and delivered. It's a shame that the service and food were below expectations...but oh well. Lesson learned.
Do you ask for your money back when you go the movies and hate what you saw? Or when you buy a fight on PPV and it's a boring, one sided yawner? Or buy a book that turns out to be shitty?
Why people expect to be comped or not have to pay for food at all because they had a bad experience is beyond me.
Once again, I wasnt there, obviously. Just like to hear the other side of the story.

I don't expect it. In this situation, I thought it would have been the appropriate thing to do.
A long time ago, I had brunch at the Ritz Carlton - and in the very beginning, the waitress spilled drinks all over us and the table. We still ate and drank...should they have not comped the meal?

Here is the only point of contention I have with your story. The management/server/etc... didn't handle the situation to your satisfaction. Which is something only you can comment on.
For other people, having most of a meal comped and some drinks thrown in may be an appropriate response by management for what was a poor dining experience.

i kind of got that "looking for trouble/problems" tone in the original post as well ... not doubting the OP .. but geez .. i have heard nothing but raves about rue 127 ... it is almost as if once the drinks took 20 minutes to arrive, they were seething and nothing from that point onward was going to satisfy them ...
and the earlier analogy of the pubic hair is off base .. if you take two bites of bread pudding and find a hair and call it to the attention of management .. no, you shouldn't have to pay for it .. but if you eat the whole damn thing and then point out the hair .. pay for the shite ..

Well, sometimes it's hard to demonstrate a person's lousy attitude on a message board. That's really the main area of disgust.
It's very unusual to have the manager display the same level of unprofessionalism as one of the surly wait staff.
Since you know Ray personally, I'll be happy to shoot you an e-mail address where he can discuss this with me.
And please tell him that an e-mail was already sent to the restaurant - with zero response.

The whole meal? Nope. Maybe free drinks and appetizers. It was a simple accident. shite happens. If she soaked you to the point of you not being able to stay, then they give your a generous gift certificate. If you can still eat and drink, then pay for some of it.
I'm starting to really wish I heard the other side of this story...

All I can say is that rue 127 has been great every time I have visited.
