quote:Hornets247 had a nice breakdown of it, from a Hornets perspective.
If the hard cap is phased in then existing contracts remain and new deals are done with the new rules in mind
Talked about teams having two seasons to get their rosters under the hard cap. Also the possibility of each team having the ability to void ONE contract(Similar to the rule after the late 90s lockout). Owners would still have to pay that player his money, his contract just wouldnt count against the cap.
That doesnt seem like a huge sticking point because guys will still get their money.
Imo, this is what could drag this thing on a LONG TIME:
quote:NO WAY the players are gonna go for having contacts slashed that they signed fair and square, because the owners realized they fricked up.
This season, a little over 2 billion dollars was spent on players salaries. The league wants to cut that number significantly. What the league has proposed in the new CBA is an immediate reduction in players salaries; slashing them either 15, 20, or 25 percent, depending on what salary bracket they fit into. From what I have heard, salaries under 6 million would be slashed 15%, 6-11 million would be slashed 20%, and anything over 11 million would be slashed 25%.

That's another thing that could help get teams under a hard cap a bit quicker.
I guess I was wrong, I always thought you could buy out a guy's contract and then it was off of your books against the cap.

The agreed-upon buy-out amount (see question number 62) is included in the team salary instead of the salary called for in the contract. If the player had more than one season left on his contract, then the buy-out money is distributed among those seasons in proportion to the original salary. For example, say a player had three seasons remaining on his contract, with salaries of $10 million, $11 million and $12 million. The player and team agree to a buyout of $15 million. The $15 million is therefore charged to the team salary over the three seasons.
Interesting to see the guys that would get cut. Arenas definitely. Rip Hamilton,Rashard Lewis, maybe Okafor

Link the hornets board thread plz
ETA buying out a Player still counts against your cap number unless his contract is specifically written in a certain way to make it completely voidable
The NBA owners have much more bargaining power than NFL owners because they arent squabbling over splitting profits, they are negotiating to save a third of the league from going under. Even getting salaries cut is better than losing 100 jobs

Which is part of the rumor behind the Joe Johnson deal. Supposedly ATL was banking on Johnson's deal being voided
Would be pretty awesome for the Hawks

I rarely have sympathy for the owners, but the NBA owners aren't crying wolf here.
$45M is really low. i mean like...i'd guess it's half the current salary
and the owners have nobody to blame but themselves

if everybody has the same cap, guys will still want to go to the chosen few markets
remember, the heat were under the cap last offseason

how long do you think the lockout will last, SFP? Preseason starts in October

The Lakers would probably be the most screwed, but pretty much every contending team would be screwed unless they could cut players (actually unless the are allowed to cut players, it wouldn't even be possible to get under $45M for teams like the Lakers or Heat)
The Heat have the big 3, Haslem, Miller, and Anthony locked for the next 3 years (with player options after that)
Even with the 25% cuts, the big 3 would each make over 12M a year. The 15% cuts to the other three would still cost them about 11M. That would be 47M right there. Over the hard cap with only 6 players.
The Bulls have Boozer, Deng, and Noah signed to some pretty big deals. Korver and Brewer are also locked up for a couple years. Boozer would get $10.1M, Deng 9.2, Noah 8M, Korver 4.25, Brewer 4. That is 35M for 5 players and Rose would need a new deal. And these are just the salaries for next year, by the time Rose needs his new deal it will be closer to $40M.

According to Forbes 17 of the 30 teams lost money in 2009-2010
The reality is there isn't ten teams about to go under but there are 5 that are sinking fast. If they dont get the financial agreement rewritten then a snowball effect could sweep the problems to more than just the bottom 5
Stern wants the players revenue share to go from 57% to 40% even half that would dramatically effect the team values in a positive direction
It is worse than you think

no idea. the players aren't AS bad as the last time, but there are so many guys still living check to check it won't last that long
honestly, it depends on the owners and how bad they want to crush the players. i don't believe this $45M hard cap shite, b/c the bigger market teams will not go for it. i seriously doubt there is true owner solidarity in that offer

If the owners want to stop losing money, they should stop overpaying for inferior players. It's as simple as that. It's not like there's like a Yankees-like team in the NBA that inflated players salaries with a 200 million dollar payroll. There's no excuse for the owners who keep offering horrible contracts year in and year out.
