If you're just fishing in a neighborhood pond I wouldn't worry about it. I doubt WLF Agents will be patrolling that are. Hook them through the back or eye socket so they won't get loose, and if they do they'll die soon after.
about three or 4 times a year my kid catches an oscar in a gully by our house..

We have been working with the cocahoe farmer as well. The gold ones do look badass. We've done some research with the minnows at different salinities, and yes they can survive for bait usage in freshwater. They just don't grow really well in freshwater, so they shouldn't be an escape/invasive problem if they were to get "liberated" from the hook.

I had some in the big white house on Dalrymple. They loved the small BR roaches.

I'm convinced a cocahoe could survive if you just made sure to spit on it once every 12 hours. Seriously, though, we had an old broken hot tub that was filled with rain water. We had about 2 dozen cocahoes left after a fishing trip and threw them in the hot tub. They were still alive and well for at least a month later.

Of course it is legal in Bama...everything from marrying your sister to still holding lynching is looked up in good light.

We tested a theory that we had heard anecdotally - put ice in an icechest, covered the ice with damp burlap cloth, and threw 10 cocahoes on the burlap for over 1 hour. All but 1 of them started swimming around when we put them back in the tank. They are definitely tough SOBs.

Talked to several guys that commercially supply bait shops, and when the storm minnows (not cocahoes) come out after a hurricane, they transport them in the back of their pickups on wet burlap. Those things are even tougher than cocahoes-I remember tearing the specs and reds up in Christmas Camp Lake after a storm passed on those things.
Would love to get my hands on some gold colored cocahoe minnows! Those would have to be great.

If gold fish are illegal to fish with in La it's a new development. I know bait shops sold them not too long ago.
After reading thread ETA:
It's also illegal to release shiners in the water from what I understand.

I know of multiple bait shops in NELA that had goldfish as of last year. I've never heard anything about using them as live bait being illegal
Ive caught plenty of catfish on them but never bass btw.

From page 17 of LDWF's fishing regs. I guess that makes me an outlaw.
