Trichomycteridae (pencil catfishes).
No fish of any species from outside
the state shall be liberated within the

into state waters without written
permission of the Secretary.
Exotic species of Asian carp (silver,

This is the only place goldfish are mentioned in state fishing regulations.

Theory: Using goldfish as bait would result in at least some of them being released into the wild.

I don't know if using them as baitfish is considered "liberating" them. May want to get some clarification with WLF before you use them.
ETA: Dammit, you beat me to it.

If you're just fishing in a neighborhood pond I wouldn't worry about it. I doubt WLF Agents will be patrolling that are. Hook them through the back or eye socket so they won't get loose, and if they do they'll die soon after.

makes sense . . . but how do you know it's "dead" dead?

Guys people have been fishing with live gold fish for years and this is the first I have ever heard it being illegal. I know a store that's selling live ones now for bait.
To the OP if it was me I would set out a bream trap and use the 3 to 4 inch fish for bait.

Slick- My friend owns the only cocahoe minnow farm in the country. I used to help him with it but got too busy with my "real" job. We were working on a strain of gold cocahoe minnows that bass would tear up. Our minnows would last longer in fresh water because they are farm raised in lower salinity than wild caught ones. Also, they are healthier in general...less disease, better nutrition, etc. Anyway, he runs out every year because he cannot keep up with production yet. They are working on some new techniques to increase production and probably expand. We have yet to sell any of the gold cocahoes until they are in full production.
All that being said, yes cocahoes are a good freshwater bait!

I've heard this is illegal. I used to go to Campus Lake at LSU with a minnow trap and a slice of bread and catch so many juvenile perch the trap would get heavy. They were great bass bait when fished under a cork.

Get shiners and put some gold food coloring in the water. It's worth a try!

To use a live trap sort of, to use bream for bait no. To use a live trap you have to follow the same rule hoop netters do. He is in a private pond so I think he can use what ever he wants.

They actually make markers than you can use to color the shiners.

That sounds badass. In Louisiana?
I've always wanted to work at a fish hatchery or something like that. Should've majored in some kind of animal science/marine biology.

Yeah, it's in North Houma / Schriever. It's a gold mine if they can expand it. I would love to do it full time but at this point he can't pay me enough.
We only sold to bait shops in South Louisiana and one in Texas, but if they could expand, we would be able to sell everywhere.
The original owner got lucky when he caught his first batch to breed. There were a few minnows with the albino strain in them, so when he hatched his first batch, he had some albino ones. (look "gold") The gold ones would catch 5 fish to every 1 of the regular minnows.

Yeah, I imagine if he could produce a steady supply of gold/albino cocahoes, he'd be able to make some serious cash.
