The Sun Belt might add another school -- Louisiana Tech??

The conference has entertained expansion overtures from multiple programs in recent months, and the league has expressed keen interest in at least one of those candidates, The Miami Herald has learned.
Sources close to the situation would not specify which school is atop the list of contenders, but the pool of potential programs is relatively shallow when the conference’s top two criteria are factored in.
The Sun Belt would only consider universities with an established Football Bowl Subdivision program currently aligned with another conference. And the conference would want any new member to fit into its geographical footprint.
quote:
Of course, only schools currently aligned with non-BCS automatic qualifying conferences would have anything to gain by joining the Sun Belt. Furthermore, Conference USA and Mountain West programs likely would see a move to the Sun Belt as a step down, so schools such as UCF are not an option.
And so, the Sun Belt would likely poach a school from either the Western Athletic — which will lose four teams to the MWC in the next two years — or the Mid-American conferences.
And, winnowing the field even more, the southern-most MAC school is Ohio University — far from a tropical destination.
“Realignment will sooner or later affect us,” Western Kentucky president Gary Ransdell said. “I think the Southeast has to be where we focus our attention.”
Perhaps tellingly, Ransdell added: “The WAC can’t afford to lose much more if they’re going to be a viable conference.”
By 2012, the WAC will become just a seven-school football conference, four of which — including Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State — are past members of the Sun Belt.

The La Tech messageboard would be gold if this happens.

Jay Walker doesn't think the SBC would even accept Tech if they asked to come back. LINK
I think they would, fwiw. Texas State is another option, they'd be a huge get for baseball.

Don't fool yourself. The sunbelt is now a better football conference than the "new wac" and is our best option outside of cusa. I never thought I would say that a year ago, but what a difference a year makes. We have to do what's best for us and that is NOT the wac!

I love Tech. I hope they get better.

I was just about to post this, h.
I really want Tech fans to chime in on which of these groups do they want in on:
Group One:
(Denver)
Idaho
New Mexico State
San José State
Texas-San Antonio
Texas State
Utah State
Group Two:
(Arkansas-Little Rock)
Arkansas State
Florida Atlantic
Florida International
Louisiana-Lafayette
Louisiana Monroe
Middle Tennessee State
North Texas
South Alabama
Troy
Western Kentucky
I bash Tech like nobody else, but I'm not doing it here: Tech is better off in the Sun Belt at this point, and frankly, the Sun Belt is slightly better off with Tech in it, too.

latechbbb.com is hilarious to read. even in an imploding WAC, they call the Sun Belt the "belch" and they think Tulane will move to the Sun Belt so they can move to CUSA

As a Tech grad, I agree with this

That is just ridiculous.
But Tech's message boards are no different than the Rant, or any other college message board. It is full of homers and idiots.

I saw a thread a few years ago where the OP said, "We need to focus on getting a Big 12 invite."
I must have stared at that post for an hour in disbelief.

I know other Tech grads will hate me for this, but it would be good for Tech to play ULM and ULL.

Why would Tech want to stay in the WAC? It is a dead conference.

quote:It's true. Tech was happy to join the WAC so it could try and make itself better and climb to a higher tier. I can appreciate that ambition.

But, it didn't really happen. After a decade in the WAC, Tech isn't significantly more respected than they were 10 years ago. They gave it a whack (dyswidt?), and I honestly believe they plateaued.
Are they a better program than ULL and/or ULM? The realist says, "Yes, a little," while your average Tech fan says "Yes, by a mile."
At this point, playing ULL, ULM, ASU, and UNT is better for Tech than playing Idaho, NMSU, USU, and SJSU.
To have ULL, ULM, and Tech playing a round-robin each year would bring me (and many others) much joy.

Louisiana Tech went to the WAC for "separation" from other state schools not named LSU. They thought they'd be in the WAC a couple of years, then get an invite from CUSA or even the Big XII. Despite Tech's similar records to UL and ULM over the last 5 years or so, they still tout out this superiority thing and it comes from the president to the boosters. It's kind of pathetic if you read their messageboards.

Yeah I know why they joined the WAC, but the WAC is no longer a top mid major conference anymore. It's dead.
Might as well swallow your pride, join the Sun Belt, and play some more local teams while awaiting that precious CUSA invite.
