Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries News
L.D.W.F. Investigating Decapitated Eagle
Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Enforcement Division agents are seeking the public's help after finding a federally protected decapitated bald eagle in a drainage ditch in Franklin Parish on April 3.
Anyone providing information leading to the arrest or conviction of the guilty party is eligible for up to $2,000 in cash rewards. LDWF and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are both offering $1,000 to help solve this case.
"To see any protected animal decapitated in a ditch is disheartening enough, let alone the animal that represents our symbol of freedom," said Capt. Alan Bankston, LDWF's Regional Captain for the Monroe area. "However, to find out what happened to this eagle, we really need help from the public. We are urging the public to offer up any information they might hear so we can hold someone accountable for this brutal crime."
Anyone with information may call the LDWF Operation Game Thief Hotline at 1-800-442-2511. Callers may remain anonymous.
Agents believe the eagle had been dead for a couple of days before being found. LDWF agents recovered the eagle and are currently scheduling a necropsy to determine a cause of death.
The eagle is protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. For each violation of these acts, a $5,000 fine and up to 18 months in jail may be imposed if convicted.
For more information, contact Adam Einck at aeinck@wlf.la.gov or 225-765-2465.

Not to mention what good does it do to kill a bald eagle? You can't have the animal mounted, you can't show off your pics of your kill, & if you run your mouth, which we know you will, eventually you'll get caught because someone who doesn't think it is "cool" to do this kinda shite is gonna turn your dumb arse in. Stupid people doing stupid things, enjoy your "closet trophy" that is until you do show it to someone & get turned in.

How does one go about catching an eagle to decapitate it? Must be a young serial killer getting started. I hope they give details on the necropsy.

If you find one dead, your not suppose to touch them. Call DWF immediately. A buddy of mine works for Entergy and one was dead on a powerpole. They wanted to fine him because he brought it back to the office. They supposedly give the dead ones to indian tribes.

I mean for God's sake, what is wrong with people?
Everybody knows that if you're gonna kill something like that, you bury the evidence.

seems a little weak. i feel like it needs to be harsher or at least give him the maximum sentence

There are some real creeps in the world. The death of that Eagle, though, is not nearly as bad as the two Whooping Cranes killed this year by hunters. Eagles are recovering nicely. The cranes are still on the edge of extinction.

While I dont approve of this at all, I believe 18 months in jail is more than adequate.

Pretty sure just bald eagles. I think they are sacred to the American Indians. Guy who is mounting a bird for me had a finished one and said the Indians are the only ones who can do it.

I didn't know Lloyd Christmas was a game warden now.

I'm hoping the thing died from old age or natural causes. Maybe some kid just wanted the head after it was found dead.
