127 Hours Faux Pas (Spoilers?)

While talking to my wife's friend about possibly seeing this movie, I mentioned that it would disturb me to see someone cut their own arm off. She then says "what are you talking about?"
I explain the premise of the movie and she says "thanks for ruining the movie for me?"
Was I out of line?

no, you were not out of line, I would have assumed most people were familiar with the story as well

If you were aware she was uninformed about the actual event and the possibilty existed that she might want to see the movie, I believe you could have provided enough information to allow her to make her decision without revealing the part about the arm.

Again, if he was aware of her lack of knowledge he never should have made the statement. That said, knowing the eventual outcome should not ruin this movie in any way. I suspect most who buy a ticket already know the story

I just didn't think someone could not know the events the movie was based upon.

I had just met her. Her and my wife had done some extra work in the past, thus we were discussing movies.

If your intent wasn't to spoil the movie for her I wouldn't lose sleep over it happening.
