JJ Can't Read a Defense: That's Been Our Problem

I do think either Crowton needs to go or we need a legit QB coach, but in any case, Jefferson's issue has been that he can't pick up on changing defensive schemes.
Now, maybe that is the result of poor QB coaching, who knows? This could be like the chicken and the egg argument. But in any case, we need a QB that can pick up a blitz that also knows how to adjust to different coverages.
Oh, and I know I'm correct on this.

I have a feeling he knows. But what can he do? He either has an OC that can't teach or a QB that can't learn...or both.

No, his biggest problem is his woeful accuracy.

You can't coach talent. That is God given. He just didn't give it to Jefferson. You can only teach him so much. Like polishing a turd. It's always gonna be a turd no matter what you do to it.

If this problem was only on JJ, then I would understand that the issue is the QB not the coaches. But the fact that both QBs have the same problems and both QBs have shown no signs of improvement leads me to believe the person in charge of QB play is incompetent and has no idea how to teach.

I think he has the physical talent. It's the mental and emotional talent I question, if you can call it that.

On the Staff is an experienced QB, an experienced Offensive Co-ordinator, and experienced QB Coach. His name is Ensminger!!!! What is he doing??

This and he doesn't understand the offense. Plus imo he plays scared. Crowton needs to be replaced by Bryan Harsin. If this happened with Mettenberger coming in I think LSU would be hard to beat.

And its not just Jefferson and Lee, keep going further back into Crowton's coaching career. Apparently, he's never had a QB that could read a defense and wasn't a fifth year senior coached by someone else.

So what was different about Alabama and Ole Miss?
Serious question - why could Jefferson all of sudden spot open receivers against these two teams and not anyone else?

this. he literally can't throw a football consistently. he's not the best at reading the D, but I've seen him make the right read a bunch of times only to make shitty throws. Vandy was probably the best (or worst) example of this.

I agree with your assessment of JJ, but that isn't our lone problem. Our woes have been manifold:
(1) Inconsistent blocking by the O-line;
(2) Poor QB accuracy;
(3) Dropped passes;
(4) Predictable, unimaginative playcalling;
(5) Untimely penalties;
(6) Odd running back rotations;
(7) Clock management issues;
(8) Occasional breakdowns in the defensive secondary that result in big plays (e.g. long TD against NC, long TD yielded to Ole Miss on broken coverage, Arkansas blunder);
(9) Inability to defend a spread/motion offense;
(10) General difficulty defending the run with our d-linemen.
It's not JUST JJ, though he is an issue. JMO.

I really don't think he had to in those games. For the Alabama game, in the second half, I think Les just let it all hang out and said "let it all out and throw to Randle down field". No thinking needed, just an arm.
That's the only way Jefferson is going to be successful, by taking chances down field and relying on the talent of players like Randle/Toliver/Deangelo Peterson to finish the plays.

When JJ rolls out of the pocket on pass plays he is generally more successful.
It buys him time to see things downfield (or take off if nothing is open), and masks the OL deficiencies.
That was the difference between the Ole Miss/UNC/Bama games and the really bad games.
You'll notice that he sits in the pocket on the games where he stinks.

He can read defenses, the play calling was just poor. The playbook needs to be redone and that means GC needs to go.
Sorry but GC does not belong in the SEC. He was a head coach at La Tech and BYU and only had 47 wins in seven seasons which makes him mediocre at best. Not to mention the man was mediocre at two schools that could not come close to competing in the SEC.
He has to go, I never liked him as OC for LSU and it is now time to go.
