What are some schools that are pretty irrelevant right now, that could become a solid program in the future by being built up?
i.e. FSU, VT,
i.e. FSU, VT,

FSU still recruits really well and once they get used to post Bobby Bowden era I think they'll be fine and start to get back into BCS relevance.
VT opened this year in the top 10, i wouldn't call them irrelevant.

OH, I wasn't calling them irrelevant.
They used to be irrelevant until Beamer and Bowden brought them to where they are now. I am wondering if there are any other schools like that, who can be relevant on a national scene when starting from irrelevance----like FSU and VT did.

oh, read the post wrong
to better answer your question, I think Chip Kelly has done a great job at Oregon taking them to the Rose Bowl and making them a contender every year in the Pac-10. And now that USC can't play in the postseason for a couple years, it only increases Oregon's chances of playing in the NC and surely the Rose Bowl

VT fans better enjoy the rest of Beamer's time there, because it's back to being irrelevant when he's gone.

True, but Chip kelly didn't do that. Oregon had an awesome year back in Harrington's days too. Bellotti had a lot to do with making Oregon relevant. BUT, what team nowadays that is pretty irrelevant can be made into a team of Oregon's or VT's calibur.
Example: a coach coming into a school like Illinois and making them a Big 10 champ contender.
hell, Miami wasn't shite before the 80's.

Louisville doesn't have a good enough recruiting base.
I believe Illinois does. MAYBE

Great example of Leavitt bringing them where they are today from where they started-literally nothing.
However, a 4th school in Florida make it hard for me to believe that their potential isn't already reached. I think the best they can hope for is a 9-3, 10-2. I seriously doubt they will ever contend for the NC like VT or FSU or Oregon.

From the Pac-10...
Stanford. Check out the classes that Harbaugh has been putting together since he got there. He's recruiting really well and is a pretty good game day coach too.
Washington. Of course I'm biased, but I think Sarkisian is turning things around. He landed a top-15 recruiting class last year and is set to land another top 15 class this year. A little momentum built this year with Locker as a senior, another great recruiting class next year, then $250+ million worth of a new stadium and facilities set to be done in 2013 and Washington could be on its way back to where it was for the 25 years prior to 2002.

I've thought for a while that given a pretty impressive recruiting base, Pitt should be contending for conference titles yearly and popping into the national title conversation at least once or twice a decade.

Houston Cougars!!
If Houston joins the new Mountain West to make the 12th member and the MWC gets an auto bid to the BCS, they could become the next Miami. TONS of high school talent and in a decent league other then Texas. If they committed to upgrading facilities and such, i firmly believe that Houston is THE biggest sleeping giant out there in NCAA college football.
