Question about academics and research dollars.

How are these tied to the conference that a school is in? People keep bringing this up, but I can't see how it is relevant.

In reality I don't see how it could matter what school is in what conference when it comes to research. However, for image purposes where you want to maintain an academc image maybe it matters a little.
I don't see how vandy's image or research funding is any worse just for being in the sec

Well they are tied together in the Big 10. CIC. How it works for other conferences, I have no idea.

dont' know but the big ten and pac ten are their best options in that aspect.
eta....and the fact that Mack doesn't want to play in the SEC means (imo) that texas isn't taking the SEC offer real seriously.

In the Big Ten (plus the University of Chicago), all schools actually share in research monies and findings. It is a collaboration. Other conferences do not do this though.

It's a dodge so Oregon can act like it's similar to Stanford & Berkeley.

How does sharing of reasearch money work? Most research funding/grants are designated to be used in certain ways. I.e I can't just get a million dollar grant and give half of it away

Then it seems like UT doesn't gain anything by going to the Big 10 unless they earn less in research money than the average Big 10 school, which I think is probably unlikely. By going to any other conference, they get to keep their money.

The Big 10 splits a really big pot. Penn State was behind us in research money before they joined the Big 10, now they are very far ahead of us.

If you give half of it to a research partner working on the same project, why not?
