quote:Becasue there is more to football than talent. Sometimes players just need time to mature in the progarm and learn their position before becoming starters even if they have more talent(upside) than the player starting in front of them. This is espically true for positions that have to identify formations and make on field calls like QB, Center, Middle Linebacker and Safety.
Honestly, if he were THAT much better, wouldn't he have started last year? Can't the coaches see that at practice?

Don't put me in the category of "everyone."
We are talking "better"...not necessarily dominant. I am convinced we will be better...and optimistic we will be significantly better.

Hope this guy succeeds. He is a class act and a very intelligent guy. Football IQ goes a long way when changing positions.

B/c I watched the spring game and both units looked waaaaay better running the ball. They actually came off the ball.

One of the reasons LSU's offensive line was so bad last year was because Ciron Black was so bad. Nevertheless, Miles played him anyway because he was an upperclassman and because of his past contributions. In any event, Black should have been benched early because his contribution after 3 great seasons was truly pathetic. Not to mention that Miles has always played upperclassman ahead of younger players who were better.

They looked better at run blocking but at the same time they looked like crap in pass protection, especially the tackles.

Kendrick Adams, Sam Montgomery, and Barkevious Mingo are going to make up the best DE rotation in the league. They are all incredibly fast off the point of attack. I wouldn't put too much stock into this.
I'd say we have average LBs this year, but our DBs and DL is going to be the BEST IN THE LEAGUE.

benched in favor of whom exactly?

Cause it can't get worse

They will average about 310 instead of 295

The players replacing them were on the team and able to play but not good enough to start over last year's starters. This would lead any rational person to believe that the other 3 starters & those behind them aren't very good/very well coached (whatever you want to say).

I don't necessarily think the OP was getting at this but it seems the attitude among the more negative posters is that every area we were good in last year will be worse and every area we struggled in will ne at least that bad if not worse.
Well, specifically with regard to the offensive line, it is HIGHLY unusual to improve in the OL with a bunch of new starters. Even assuming the premise that they are bigger and more talented (yet to be established, except maybe for the part about being bigger), it usually takes an OL a while playing together to gel and become effective.
And, frankly, if these guys really are better players than what we had on the field last year and the coaches just sat them on the bench because of some arbitrary rule about always playing upperclassmen ahead of freshmen and sophomores, then that's a real indictment of the coaching staff.
None of us knows if or how much the OL will be improved this year. Obviously, there's not much room to get worse or even stay the same, so SOME improvement is likely. But whether it'll be dramatic enough improvement to the point where they are actually good is still highly in doubt.

Not every player on every team every year, but in general, yes. A new starter replacing a departed one is usually not as good in that first year as a new starter as the departed one was the year before.

This really tell us a lot about our DE's. Ken Adams (reportedly ran a 4.4 40 yesterday), Montgomery and Mingo are known pass rushers. I don't think there's ever been a faster group of DE's at LSU. But on the flip, the didn't stop the run.

I agree. In addition, Miles said last year, that was the best OL that he had seen. Why should young players be expected to play when the cohesion of the unit could be jeopardized?

3 new starters in hurst, lonergan, & Blackwell. The nice OL recruiting class from a couple of years ago is a year older providing competition/depth. My biggest concern is barksdale at LT. Addition of wilkerson to the staff.
May turn out to be one of the best hires LM ever makes. Former AA & NFL player will get the attention of those dreaming of following in his footsteps.
Welcome back, Big Ben.

They've got the "Buddy Teevens-Tulane Syndrome." Bigger...Stronger...Faster.
Barksdale, Dworaczyk, Lonergan, Blackwell and Hurst will be better overall as a GROUP, than Black, D, T-Drunk, Hitt and BD were last year.
Maybe (Maybe not) Wilkerson can add "Something" in terms of technique and attitude that will be beneficial, but it's a mystery to me why an inexperienced and unproven Graduate Assitant, even though he has never coached a down of college football, is being looked upon by some as the Savior of the 2010 OL. I'd much rather had seen LM gone out and hired an OLDER, EXPERIENCED and PROVEN OL coach that knows the tricks of the trade to replace the current coach who seems to be kind of weak in the OL coaching technique area.......
