I will say playing in the out field and running down fly balls and throwing to a base is one of the purest forms of athletism.
It takes speed agility anticipation hand eye coordination leaping ability explosiveness body control and arm strength.

Do you ever stop to think why that might be?
Wrestling takes way more energy than boxing

I know sprinters are very one dimensional but those guys look like freak athletes up close. I guess so do Olympic gymnast.

Exactly, but idiots will not stop say how you have to be in better shape in boxing than MMA. with all do respect to boxing by the way.

athleticism is hard to define and can vary in meaning from person to person.
outside of a few positions, i think football produces the best pure athletes

Football.
I marvel at the pure athletic ability of the top DB's. The speed at which those guys are able to read and react and change directions based on what the guy they are covering is doing is amazing to me.

I say its the combat sports(Boxing MMA KickBoxing) and if I had to just pick one out of the 3 it would be Boxing(fights are 3x as long as K1 and UFC).
what type of boxing are you watching?? the LONGEST boxing match is a 12 rounder with 3 min per round. that's 36 min. the SHORTEST ufc fight is 3 round at 5 min each round. that's 15 min and not all boxing matches are 12 rounds. UFC fighters exert way more energy in their fights as compared to boxers IMO.

Steve Nash won 2 MVPs without playing defense.

I have a problem calling baseball players the best pound for pound athletes. Sure they play a ton of games a season, but how much physical exertion do baseball players go through during a game? An outfielder might get five or six opportunities a game to show off his glove and most of those are going to require little running. Base running is even a rare talent in baseball today as the number of steals declines league wide. Baseball in general is a skill sport where the best athletes are not necessarily the best players.
NBA players and the NFL skill position players are better athletes along with the average soccer player who runs for over 5 miles in a game to go along with his skillful time on the ball.

Steve Nash is actually a hell of an athlete, his horrible defense notwithstanding. His fitness levels are incredible for his age. His off-season regimens are grueling which allows him to play a young player's offensive game.

Either way throwing punches and moving for 36 minutes takes alot more fitness then being on the ground battling for position and attempting and escaping submissions for 15 minutes IMO.

I'd definitely say NFL DB's
An Elite CB can run faster, jump higher, react quicker, accelerate faster, run longer than just about anyone who needs a balance of all those.
MMA could also make a serious argument.
Also think of NFL DE's. They have to explode, shed blocks from guys usually much bigger than them, jump high all while carrying a frame that is probably close to 100+lbs more than my CB example.

The thing about the NFL is it takes almost no stamina compared to soccer basketball boxing etc.
