It's not just about length. Pipe has diameter too, you know.
If there was a simple fix for this, it would have been implemented. Trust me on that.

The drill pipe from the rig to the ocean floor and was obviously at least a mile long. Also, the "riser" connecting the drilling vessel on the surface to the blowout preventer stack on the ocean floor is also a mile long "pipe" held vertical by the surface vessel. The length of pipoe required is not a problem, and BP is currently tryinhg to use this exact solution, it just takes time to assemble the pieces needed.

Lots of oil wells make saltwater with oil, especially onshore these days.

Your the same guy that said oil is in a sand that runs around the world. Maybe you've worked offshore as a hand but your knowledge seems very limited.

Just stuff some rags into the hole. That'll stop it.

What if we got a big metal pipe and put it around the oil leak
Do you have any mile-long "big metal pipes" lying around somewhere?
the only big part would be on the ground, surrounding the well site.
it could feed into a normal sized pipe after 10 feet.
I think its a good idea. YOu would be able to surround it with the large section and collect it up the pipe, and at least get to burn it up.

there are two solutions that haven't been tried yet.

How about using an enlarged prostate? That'll stop the flow.
Of course the well will be up all night going back and forth to the bathroom.

Why do't somebody just swim down there and close the damn valve? How hard can that be?

If you just do something quick the first time, you can screw stuff up exponentially making it almost impossible to do right.

A couple of giant wet/dry vacs should solve the problem.

Stupid question but I'll go ahead and ask it. Why was the original fire ever put out? Seems like you could have just let it burn, thus eliminating a spill in the meantime, until a solution to stop the flow was implemented.
I understand that subsea currents have an effect on where the oil surfaces since the release point in 5000ft+.

how big is the hole it is flowing out of?
Posted on 5/3/10 at 2:11 pm to Lester Earl
The real solution, is to plug the hole with one big hot dog. Everyone knows hot dogs are the mortal enemy to oil. Then we'll fly away on our rainbow flower and get a kiss from the dragon prince.
