Should Ricky Blanton have his jersey retired

Only problem...his # was 33, just like a certain other Tiger.
Stats aren't flashy, but was there a better ambassador of the LSU program besides Shaq?

I'll never forget his celebration down the court after scoring the go ahead bucket against Kentucky (after having lost to the Wildcats 3 times that year). Great ambassador, good player, but there's a long list of players that should have their jersey retired before Blanton's name comes up.

Stats need to be flashy to get your jersey retired IMO

I know...but Ricky was just a special breed. Exceptions could be made.

No. Ronald Dupree, Howard Carter, Tasmin Mitchell and Glen Davis with possibly Ronnie Henderson would be the only qualified players.

But what do they lack that Blanton had, 20?

does him playing a part in putting nicholls basketball on probation tarnish this image? or do people not really know/care?

No and it is not close.
Remember all HoF have been watered down in the last 25 years, by putting in border line players.
But retiring numbers is worse when it is a border line player.
other than:
Maravich
Petit
Shaq
Rudy
only CJ, and Ethan are close to that level.
There is a big drop form there to Ricky, and I have 7 other players ahead of him.
Ricky is more of a heart and soul player, much like Don before him.

Excellent post. I agree with you.
I wonder, though, about Joe Dean. How good was he? Was he an Apple Sanders type player? He played before I came to BR, so I don't know much about him as a player.

Good player, but not great. So no.

No, but I liked Blanton. Retiring jerseys is reserved for VERY special players.

Ricky Blanton is one of my all-time favorites, but I don't think he even deserved to be on the LSU Top 20 all-time list. I don't think he was the best player on any LSU team he was on.

no, only other one should be chris jackson (and even he is borderline since he left so early)

Great Tiger, not HoF worthy though
He ran a good basketball camp too

All of this is code for "let's retire the white guy's number."

LSU's policy for retiring jerseys is that a player must first be in the LSU Hall of Fame & to be in the Hall of Fame a player must first graduate. When SHAQ came back and graduated, the following day he was inducted into the LSU Hall of Fame & his jersey was retired. Those at the game may remember his renaming LSU to Love Shaq University. Thus Chris Jackson, Brandon Bass, Big Baby or any other recent LSU great player will never get their jersey retired until they get their degree. The next logical player is actually going to be Tasmin. He will graduate. He is going to be in the top 2 or 3 in both rebounds and points. He has 2 SEC Championships and a final four. He's very similar to Rudy in that he has been very steady and consistant if never really outstanding (at least in the eyes of a lot of Tiger fans). And he's been a great representative for LSU. But he will likely have to wait a while like Rudy.
