Once you hit Atlanta, is it better to go through the city on 85 and then out to Athens on Hwy 29, or should we bypass ATL on 285, then out to Athens on Hwy. 78??

Google Maps shows a 5 minute difference, just wondering if it would be quicker to go around ATL and then backroads into Athens.

We will be passing through ATL around 9 am on Saturday.

TIA

Don't know about that, but Alabama state troopers have become a lot more aggressive than in year's past. If you are angling in from North La through Miss and come towards Birmingham in particular, keep it at 75 or under, especially on I-459 around town up to I-20.

also watch out for speed traps on I-85 just inside 285 (assuming you go that route). DeKalb County police are out in force. yesterday, my colleague was pulled over for doing 73 in a 65. The cops had a row of patrol units lined up and one guy radaring. had like 10 cars pulled over. I could see them being out on Sat.

i just moved from atlanta. on sat. am, go straight thru the city. it's closer and almost no 18 wheelers (it's illegal for 18 wheelers to go thru the city). i say this will save you more than 5 mins.

You should be fine on 85, but when in ATL, always use 285 over 75 or 85 when you can.

85 to 316/29 is the preferred route. I hardly ever see cops on the interstates in ATL. 316, however, is usually patrolled heavily, including a spot where the SL drops to 55.

I have some friends that drive back and forth to Atlanta from here a good bit and they suggested taking I59 to I20 because of the construction on I85 right before Atlanta. They've said traffic has been pretty rough there. Can anybody confirm this. Google maps doesn't have it adding too much time.
