Regarding the policy on illegal streaming audio links...

I received a call last week from the LSU Athletic Department asking me to assist them in removing links to streaming audio of the LSU games.
I was told that it is illegal to rebroadcast the transmission of the games without consent, and that a cease and desist order has been sent to UStream.com and other similar sites by LSU/SEC to stop this practice.
I was also told that the free streaming sites obviously hurt the pay-to-listen Geaux Zone business.
I figured that the decision to remove links to those sites would not be popular. Since I live in Houston, I too have benefited from those links.
But I don't want this site to be assisting some practice that is deemed illegal. I think you have seen a lot more media entities cracking down on the illegal rebroadcast/redistribution of copyrighted video/audio content...YouTube is a prime example.
Anyhow, I figured I needed to get this out.

Thanks for explaining, it's a bummer, but at least people will know to not ask for links like all day yesterday....

Dam this sucks. I travel a lot and these links are really a lifesaver.

Thanks...I guess it is a sign of the times. Those streaming sites will come under a lot of pressure. I don't know if those sites have rules and guidelines that state that your can't rebroadcast copyrighted video/audio, so I am not sure if this will be a prolonged fight between the schools and those sites.
Technology has allowed schools like LSU to more centrally control the distribution of its live broadcasts, and reap some benefits (ie, $$$ from Geaux Zone).

Thanks for the explanation.
Anyone know rates on GeauxZone? Quality?

If they think this will increase revenue for the Geaux Zone, then they are out of touch with what is taking place today.

Thanks for the clarification Chicken!
Just for clarification on TD policy --- If there was a legal link to streaming audio, say Villanova athletics had a stream for today's baseball game, would it be OK to post a link to it? This is just a hypothetical.

Hey chicken, Headslash wants to let you know that he did not mean to cause you any grief and that he was only trying to help fellow tiger fans.

quote:of course it would be ok. LSU's beef is with these 3rd party entities that rebroadcast the transmission without permission.

doesn't hurt it near as bad as the suck-arse performance, coupled with zero customer service, of the Geaux Zone..

Geaux Zone suck too much
Improve it about 100% and put some dedication into it and maybe people would consider paying for it.

Thanks for that.
And another thing.. and this will go over really well, I'm sure.
Since LSU legitimately controls the "descriptions and accounts" of their material, is doing play-by-play, as is happening right now on the Rant, also a no-no?
It seems that they (LSU) could decide it's not allowed.

Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt provide free streaming broadcasts for every game.
Legitimate radio affiliates for Alabama, Auburn, and occasionally Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi State, and South Carolina sometimes have streaming links available for their teams.
Can you pass along to your omnipotent admins that in no way, shape, or form those links are illegal?
There seemed to be a little confusion about that yesterday with a legitimate Auburn radio affiliate.
