Deescaltion without concession is certainly a win in most settings. Maybe not for Trump because of emotion, but objectively that's a win in any case.

I listened to Beck this morning. For him to buy into to Trump plan is impressive and it's hard to argue it's not a winning strategy.

The "not ceding" authority in the OP is a lame attempt to make it appear like he gained something as if ceding authority was ever a possibility in the first place.
