Back in the day, they had a policy of not playing in bowl games. The LSU Tigers were set to play in the 1970 Cotton Bowl. LSU was 9-1. But out of nowhere Notre Dame decided to change their bowl policy and bumped LSU out of the Cotton Bowl. LSU decided to stay home and sit out bowls. How ironic that Notre Dame has decided to sit it out because they were snubbed. I have hated Notre Dame ever since they pulled that stunt back then and will always hate them. Go to hell Notre Dame!

You know if two teams were even by the so called committee ...head to head games weigh into the equation...They lost to Miami and I don't care if it is Week 0 or Week 10..you lost...Get over it....you beat Miami your in...Join a conference...

Same here. They wanted to play No 1 Texas. They lost.

One of our best teams stayed home because, by the time ND made their announcement to start playing in bowls, all of the other major bowls were locked up. Back then there were 4 major bowls. The Rose, matched the Big 10 and the PAC 10, while the Sugar, Orange, and Cotton, negotiated matchups from the rest of the field. So, going to a lesser bowl was not worth it.

I’m not a ND fan either, but Texas, Vandy or ND should have the 11 & 12 spots. It’s a complete joke that JM & Tulane are in. Common sense was not used in the way they picked the 12 teams.

LSU and Bert Jones were 9-1

The 1969 team that went 9-1 set to play in the 1970 Cotton Bowl was quarterbacked by Mike Hillman from Lockport.

The problem with the eye test when teams are that close, is the eye test can be wrong.

We’ve all picked games wrong before.

They stay out of conference , schedule cream puffs and service academies then want to jump into the natty conversation at the last minute .

From ND’s perspective: They were ahead of Bama at #9 for two weeks. Then, magically, the committee dropped them behind Bama at #10 before this week’s games. They didn’t lose. They didn’t play a close game to inferior competition like Bama did vs Auburn.

I can see why they’re upset with committee and their gripe is legit. Why did they rank them behind Bama after being ahead of them for two weeks when all Bama did was play a cupcake and eke out a win vs Auburn? Why did they pull behind Bama when Bama has a two score loss to a 5 win team and both of ND’s losses were to playoff teams?

I would’ve put them & Miami in and left Bama out.

I don’t disagree but think it is fitting, giving what they did to LSU, that they got screwed.

Yep. They possibly cost LSU a share of the 1970 national title by doing that. I can’t stand Notre Dame.

I could kind of understand a 12-0 team outside the big 4 conferences, but both these teams have losses.

1996 they declined the Independence Bowl invitation because they felt it was beneath them and thought a better bowl would invite them, but no bigger bowl did so they didn't go to a bowl at all despite an 8-3 record

1997 they once again got an Independence Bowl invitation and decided to accept because it was probably the best they were going to get. It ended up being a rematch against LSU, who ND beat in the regular season, and LSU beat their asses in white helmets and gold jerseys.

ND doesn’t want to risk losing a bowl game which would only confirm they didn’t belong in the playoff. Sorry ur only “big” win was against soy boy’s team. So much for “spot the ball” huh?

They knew the rules. Maybe they should have either won more or lost less.

ETA and it’s a bitch move that. I don’t follow ND recruiting but I’m assuming they have a good number of early enrollees coming in. They are shooting themselves in the foot by passing on the extra practices that come with the bowl.
