Saw John Mulaney in Tampa last night, man is a master class

First off, this is my first time seeing a big time comedian live, it was at the Straz. They had a no phone policy (i got a post it note explaining it), which I get, they don't want material getting out there before they release the eventual special. But the opener hadn't even started and they had security guards eagerly running up to people telling them to put them away. A lady got kicked out before the lights went down, which was fun. I had to walk out the theater just to text our babysitter we were going to be radio silent.
Mulaney was amazing. Usually with standup they have that one section that gets ho-hum and then you're back to laughing hard again. He was non stop killing it, loved the new material.
He REALLY doesn't like RFK jr. I guess he used to run in the same circles as a lot of comedians in New York City, and Mulaney made it clear a few times that he thinks Jr is a shite person.
So yeah, he went into politics a bit, but I thought he did a great job not belittling anyone who supports one side or the other. His stuff on Trump was more about his age, which was part of his bigger bit about how dangerous old people were, how any time up until 64 they will hardly vote, but then they hit 65 and that's all they want to do. All that to say he made an old couple who were sitting in the front row leave. He waved goodbye to them, asked if they were coming back. Apparently their daughter was still sitting, so he asked her. "They were grumbling a bit."
"Well....I did say they should stop voting and probably go ahead and die. Don't blame them."
Opening act was garbage, was glad she was only up for like 15 minutes or so.
He sells out pretty quickly, but if you get a chance, see Mulaney live. Great time.

I saw him in BR a couple years ago. It was after his rehab. I thought he was good

He has, in the past, planted people in the crowd as part of a bit.
Wouldn't surprise me if that was the case again here.

This was the only part that I thought was not so great. He went from typical Mulaney stuff to sort of a political tirade. It kind of threw me.
But other than that, was a really fun show.

It was the weird butch assistant on Hacks.
She wasn't terrible, but a very forgettable performance. I don't remember anything from it. Fortunately, it was a pretty short set. Maybe 10 min?

Robby Hoffman. Never heard of her. Looks like a stereotypical New York alt comic.

Not surprising that an alcoholic pill-popping cokehead would dislike the health guy.

The phone free events for comedians are so freaking stupid. If you are that paranoid about the next crowd knowing your punchline then you are an absolute shite act. Way too many of these guys do it.
I give credit to Tom Green. He’s put full 1 hour sets up of his live shows on YouTube

Why would a comedian allow his stand-up to leak? That's money out of his pocket. Musicians don't like it when their music gets Napstered, same thing here. I saw Joe Rogan once when the show was no phones allowed. Left mine in the car. His whole set was his next Netflix special.

This horrible take aside, keeping material from leaking isn't the only reason and arguably not even primary reason for locking phones up. It's mainly for rude assholes that go to a show and can't keep from texting, talking, or checking social media.

It's not like either is the poster child for personal health morality.

True. What's Mulaney's beef then? Politics? Or is RFK just another old guy he wants to die?

Not the same thing at all.
A comedian doing a tour is no different than a rock band doing a tour. Rock Bands don’t have “phone free” events. They let the person who bought a ticket use their phone to capture memories/photos/performances. And seeing a clip of that uploaded to YouTube doesn’t detract from future shows. The audience knows what the musician is going to play before they even get a ticket. But they go for the performer. To experience the live performance.
I’ll never buy a ticket to a “phone free event”. If you suck that much as a performer that you can’t connect to each audience in an individual authentic way then I don’t wanna see your act.
“Phone free” just means “I regurgitate everything each show word for word”.
People in comedy are the most paranoid people on earth. If you are great, people will show up to see even your greatest most overly done bits. If you suck, they won’t regardless of how hard you to try to hide your own content.
And it’s pretty easy for an audience member, who bought a ticket, to avoid spoilers in advance by simply not watching clips of bits posted on social media. But to not even give people a chance to take a picture with their phone is an absolute joke. I’ll never support these paranoid losers
And the reason they do it is 100% trying to not let their material get out. Has nothing to do with interruptions. I’m talking about arenas that seat 8,000 people being “phone free” events, not the 30 person comedy club
