When you have to celebrate the meme of your own town’s dystopian reputation:

The statue was cast years ago, but stayed in storage limbo because none of the “reputable places” … Wayne State U. among them… wanted it on their property

quote:

The statue campaign appears to have started around 2010 when Detroit Mayor Dave Bing was tagged in a tweet that noted Philadelphia’s statue of boxer Rocky Balboa and said RoboCop would be a “GREAT ambassador for Detroit.” Bing tweeted back, saying there were no such plans. But some Detroiters ran with the idea, crowdfunding it through a 2012 Kickstarter campaign that raised more than $67,000 from more than 2,700 backers worldwide, and Detroit sculptor Giorgio Gikas finished the statue in 2017. Then, it got stuck, stored away from public view.

The Michigan Science Center in Detroit ultimately nixed plans to host the sculpture in 2021, citing pressures from the coronavirus pandemic and the need to focus museum resources. Officials in Stevens Point, Wisconsin raised their hands, hoping to honor Weller, a native son of that city, by erecting it outside the police station or in a park.

The search for a suitable home for RoboCop remained in limbo until about three years ago when Toscano’s company bought a building in Eastern Market, an open-air produce market, shopping and entertainment district just northeast of downtown. Toscano says he thought they were “kidding” when he was contacted by the creator of the statue idea and Eastern Market officials. But he and his business partner gladly came on board: “It’s too unusual, too unique, too cool not to do,” Toscano said.

I’ve always wondered why the original Robocop was filmed in Dallas when Detroit at that time was the true run down city. Probably had something to do with safety & lower costs.

I guess when the statue doesn't have to have a fully human face, they turn out fairly okay.

I went to Detroit twice in the past year and it sure seemed safer and nicer than Houston.

I know
But we went all over the place (on foot and lime scooters ) and never had any issues, even staying out real late.

The 2nd trip was mainly on the outskirts but I didnt have any trouble then either.

Yes, I'm told that occasionally, it falls from it's ranking as murder rate capital of the US. Well done.

Pretty amazing what happens when you have at least 3 billionaires fighting each other for what they can do for the city. Went back in 2014 and again last year. Will be amazing to see where the city is in 10 years.

Also surprising quality of museums in the city. Including the one where this statue is located.
