that was a pretty nasty, very clear, massacre of civilians. Not druggies, not pajama clad military, but innocent women and children. {150 pax}

Not legally, but the War generally ended his presidency.

yeah that probably happen before you were born. Unless you have a draft call up number, you will need an a/I education

After thirteen days of deliberations, the longest in U. S. court-martial history, the jury returned its verdict: guilty of premeditated murder on all specifications. After hearing pleas on the issue of punishment, jury head Colonel Clifford Ford pronounced Calley's sentence: "To be confined at hard labor for the length of your natural life; to be dismissed from the service; to forfeit all pay and allowances."

The My Lai massacre wasn’t “uncovered” by the media until Nixon was in office. Nixon was left to answer questions from the press about it. As far as I know, his message was the members of the military who participated would be held accountable and he didn’t blame the Johnson administration.

you do good work with Calley. Now how about President Johnson, a democrat?

I’ve more wondered what would have happened if the Generals had determined on their own that Truman’s decision to drop the Bomb on Hiroshima was “illegal”? I mean, even to this day, there are arguments that it was by international war standards. Should they have been able to exercise that discretion under the notions being floated here now?

Can you or I relate to the draft scenario?
I certainly can't.
Yet that is a "boomer" situation which would suck beyond belief!

Fun fact: Captain Colin Powell made his bones by covering up My Lai. Was a predictor of his deceitful behavior in "weapons of mass destruction."

If WAR is HORRIBLE you have far LESS WAR!! Rules of engagement provide so much opportunity for war and military equipment sales.
Beware of the MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX. Look where we are now.

The OP questioned if there was accountability.
Yes...we the USA found the guy responsible guilt. Johnson did not run for reelection due to the unpopularity of the war, which the massacre helped to achieve.
Is the question should the CIC be guilty too...I'd say no. The reality is that war is hell and despite the politicians being stupid in their management of the war there was no top down order for the actions to occur.

Is your point that Johnson was treated differently because he was a Democrat?
Power is power. No one powerful was held responsible for My Lai. No one in the Trump Administration will be held responsible for the boats...assuming they SHOULD BE (I don't think the facts as we know them support criminal charges)...who would prosecute them?

Lyndon Johnson was perhaps the most evil man to ever be President of this country. Think about the gravity of that statement. In a place as rotten to the core as DC, his depravity stands out.

Breath-takingly evil. Stole a US Senate seat. Responsible for at least 2 murders (and maybe one assassination).
Under serious investigation for massive bribery scheme. That investigation stopped when he became president.

Many of my earliest recollections involve listening to my grandfather telling all the menfolk that Johnson was a murderer! This was back in the late 40s.
I had just understood what that word meant and could not conceive of someone being that evil. So for my entire life, I have thought of LBJ as being the most evil person I ever knew of.
