Does creatine supplementation and an high protein diet affect blood work numbers?

My doctor thinks I have something wrong with my kidneys based on BUN and eGFR levels. Told me to drink a gallon of water a day and go back in 8 weeks for more blood work. I tend to drink that amount of water daily as it is.

Yes. Creatine can absolutely throw off your test results because creatinine is processed in the kidneys and liver. However, it isn't cause for concern because it has more to do with how standard blood tests use certain markers to flag potential issues. Creatine can elevate those markers, but it is harmless. I'd definitely flag this for your doctor whenever you get a blood test.

Yes my BUN has been high for a decade and my doc attributes it to my creatine intake and high protein diet

Cystatin C is a more accurate kidney function marker if your eating a really high protein diet or have more muscle mass than average.
I actually tossed one in on this morning lab draw.

You still using Fitnomics? I used them earlier this year when I did a 100+ marker panel but then cancelled the sub because I knew it would be 6 months before I needed them again. Trying to compare just going the quest route or if the subscription model is a better deal

quote:I am. I just keep the subscription rolling and draw labs quarterly. Probably excessive but good peace of mind for me.

They should have a Black Friday sale coming soon. I usually buy them then when it’s 20% off since the req form is good for 180 days

Yes, it can affect it. I’ve been eating low carb/high protein/fat for over 20 years. I also take creatine and I lift 5x/week. Stop the creatine a week before your test and I bet you will test normal. It will give off false positives.

If you get off of creatine for 10 days before your next blood test, the effect of it on your test results should return to normal.

Gonna test this theory out in a couple weeks
