The 2025 summer box office was the worst Hollywood has seen since 1981

“We believe that a dramatic reawakening of the industrywide domestic box office has begun."- Adam Aron, CEO of AMC Entertainment (May 2025)

“Survive till ’25,” was the Hollywood mantra, as though the appeal and quality of the product had nothing to do with that survival.
“Is it time for Hollywood to concede that a lot of moviegoers in North America are never coming back? That movie theaters have permanently lost 20 to 25 percent of their customers?” the Times asked.
Yes, but for only one reason — which has nothing to do with the pandemic, streaming, or early releases to the home video market. And that single reason is … appeal.
If streaming and theatrical windows and the pandemic caused the worst summer box office in 44 years, why did the summers of 2022, 2023, and 2024 produce better box office results?
The Times does, in a roundabout way, admit that part of the problem is quality, as in tired franchises that don’t deliver like they once did: Superman, Jurassic Park, all things Marvel, etc.
Let’s face it, though — movies suck today. So far, of all the movies released this year, I can only see myself bothering to watch F1: The Movie, Sinners, and Weapons again. What does that tell you?

In 2019 and there were 9 billion dollar movies.
i don’t see a world where pre-covid Minecraft doesn’t cruise past a billion dollars.
The Aladdin remake no one talks about made a billion.

It's just woke girl-boss nonsense. Who is surprised.

quit charging an arm and leg for concessions

My theater just went up on ticket prices again. I'm about to only go during the week and only to see blockbusters because prices are ridiculous

I don't need to see any movie that bad

You know thats the primary way the actual theater makes money and stays open, right?
The tickets, especially opening weekend, go almost all to. The studios.
I know it's incredibly expensive, but I gladly always buy concessions to help the theater, especially small independent ones. It's an absolute shame they are all about to close because Hollywood has and will Continue to kill itself.

I do not go to the movies anymore due to the high ticket and concession prices. No movie-going experience is worth such costs. I'll get it on streaming if I am interested enough to see it.

Not where I’m at. $5 popcorn bucket fill ups is the best thing around here. I routinely walk into the theater, get a bucket of popcorn, then bring it home to watch sports or when we have people over.

Top Gun Maverick 3 to the rescue

Our theater has 2PM showings in the summer. I’ve always had a tradition of hitting some of those up. It was always a low bar to get me there. But this summer there wasn’t a single one that peaked my interest. It’s all so bland.

I feel 2026 is going to be major bounce back year for cinema (and tv).
Not as big as 2019 but perhaps barbenheimer levels like 2023

I’m very excited about Project Hail Mary and I think it will do well but not much else is on my radar.

It is because of all the review bombing, obviously

Hollywood sucks right now and people don't have any money

There’s no new storylines and for the most part, people don’t like Hollywood’s politics. It’s the death of late night television as well.

Personally I don't care to go to the movie theater to watch a movie, I am patient enough to wait until it hits streaming 3 months later. The only movie that I am looking forward to at this moment is the Mario Galaxy movie since I am sure I can get my kids to come with me and hit up D&B afterwards.
