He was joined by Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared Perdue at the FDOT District 1 headquarters in Bartow. DeSantis discussed plans for vertiports, which could transport people short distances by air. He said the technology is new and in its early stages, but Florida aims to build two vertiports at an FDOT testing facility. DeSantis described the concept as an “air version of an Uber,” with each vertiport accommodating four to five people.

“This will be the nation’s first advanced air mobility test track, and it will have dedicated airspace driving innovative research and development for this new technology,” DeSantis said. Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared Perdue said he and Gov. Ron DeSantis saw prototypes of vertiports at the Paris Air Show. The project is on schedule to receive federal approval sometime in 2026.

It’s basically a drone. Your chances of surviving a crash in that thing aren’t too good, especially if you are smashing into a busy interstate. No thanks…I’ll sit in traffic.

When I was a kid, maybe 6 or 7 my dad told me that by time I was old enough to drive they'd have flying cars and I remember thinking that was really cool which is why I remember him saying it.

I'm pushing 50 now.

To each their own. At this point, give me the drone and my chances if it means I never have to deal with Houston again.

The issue with this field is the players themselves. Look up Archer, Uber Elevate, etc. It’s a bunch of tech bros who are great at raising money, terrible at bringing an actual product to market. This has been around for years and none of these companies have an actual working prototype that is anywhere close to passing FAA regulations. I guess it’s a pretty huge leap in technology so maybe one shouldn’t be so cynical, but it’s tough not to be when all the people behind it are just venture-capital grifters.

Without a better power source none of these types of ideas are viable.

So about the same odds as just driving on I-4.

Fair point, Joby doesn’t seem as much of a scam.

Yes, you will likely need to outfit each car with a mini-nuclear reactor, which isn’t as bad as it sounds. Steam is the main by product. Water would be the fuel.

Dude. It’s 2025. Flying cars have been running on garbage for 10 years at this point.

Yes, in the 70s/80s, we were told by the year 2000, we'd have flying cars.
