Would have made sense to take a lump sum and keep coaching if other good options were available and he wanted to continue coaching.

Either his agent put out feelers to Florida and Penn State etc. and realized there was no market for BK or BK just decided he rather retire and not coach and get paid to do nothing.

Kelly is going to get what he is contractually owed. Or damn close. I would.

If he takes another job he’s owed less….by us. So kind of makes sense.

A lot of coaches would want a lump sum payout. Then get a new contract and continue to accumulate wins on their lifetime stats or in his case try to win a natty.

But a team able to compete for nattys would have to be willing to take him. He may have found out they are not willing to hire him. He is probably not willing to coach for less than what LSU would pay him not to coach or to take a job a lower perception school due to ego.

Most people wouldn’t be.

I feel like people aren’t getting this. Of course he wants what he’s owed, as he would like to maximize his earnings….

He’ll earn more by taking a lump sum and begin coaching somewhere. That’s the negotiation taking place, not some wishful thinking that he’ll take less out of pity

The problem is if Kelly had intent to coach again the lump sum payment with a waiver of his mitigation clause would be a better deal for him. He could double dip.

He could pretty easily in the next couple years find someone to pay him $7MM a year over 6 years and with a $30 MM settlement offer from LSU be better off by a good bit.

The problem is he might be a grifter and have no intent or drive to coach again. And if I were LSU I would fight that as not doing his diligence in finding employment.

Not to mention if the allegations of his conduct are true, LSU has cause leverage over him. I want to see LSU fight this.

I don't think he's going to coach again. The word is out that he was checked out and he's never going to check back in. I don't know why anyone would hire him after flaming out at LSU. What would be his motivation to return to coaching? He's not going to win a championship. He knew he wasn't going to win one here and it's arguably going to be harder somewhere else.

Or agree to the lower buyout and they won’t air his dirty laundry.

Other schools saw what he was about here. I doubt he gets any serious offers from schools at the P4/G5 level, if any at all.

Agreed, I think he's underestimating the hit his reputation is taking from half-assing the LSU gig. He's not going to take some small school job either, his ego won't allow that. He'll take his buyout money and maybe do television.
