I live in Northwest Louisiana and I’m getting an early start on finding some land to bow hunt on next season. I went on a semi-guided hunt in Illinois last year and had a couple hundred acres leased in Northeast Oklahoma two years ago. The ruts at both locations were unlike anything I’ve ever seen around the house. I’m looking for a place for me and 2-3 buddies. I don’t care too much about license costs but need to make sure getting non-resident license and tags won’t be an issue. For that reason Kansas is out. I’m looking hard at Oklahoma again but what about Missouri? Any other suggestions?

about Missouri

Make sure if you lease that it’s after the season is established or you have a clause that states if it changes to draw that you are out of the lease.
We hunted in 22 and 23 in Missouri and the outfitter told us that it almost had passed for draw for non residents and it kept being reintroduced.
Landowners were against it as well as anyone up there making money of the NRs, but locals hunters were pushing hard for it.

OK non resident licenses increased last year. $500 license plus $200 rifle permit now. The rifle/muzzleloader/archery permits are now separate as well

Arkansas. Plenty of public land deer and less pressure.

I’ve been thinking about making a lil trip to Arkansas to check out public areas there.

I’d seriously look at Oklahoma since you’re right there.
I hunt with this outfit and I’m pleased. You need to be able to handle DIY.

I just tried that link and it has hunting in Kansas, Missouri and Iowa. Nothing about Oklahoma.

Right. But if I lived 50 miles from Oklahoma, I’d seriously look at that state.

I assume there is a membership fee involved with this. Can you give us an estimate of what it costs?

It looks like its right up my alley though, DIY, no outfitter, private land. Could take the kids and not feel pressure.

$2,500 annually. To me, if you make two trips, it’s worth it. I turkey hunted Missouri this past spring and just returned from a Kansas archery hunt. They also appear to have good duck hunting, but I haven’t been.

I've been wanting to try Missouri but I'm in a phase of life right now that just doesn't afford me the time to scout and hunt early season like I would like. My daughter is a golfer and I'm a school administrator also coaching the golf team.... pretty much eats up our summer and fall.

Maybe in a couple of years I can look into it again.

I will say I really enjoyed hunting Central Texas. Not known for giants and we only made a couple of trips out there but it was fun and much different terrain than South Arkansas timber and Pines.

It would be a long trip for you, but Pennsylvania has the highest density of deer in the country, and the out of state license is less than $150

Pennsylvania wouldn’t be in the top 20. Massive numbers of resident hunters and average trophy quality.

Don Higgins recently said that Kansas and Northern Ohio are the spots right now.

Iowa is tremendous, but it takes 5+ points for the better areas.

Thats not bad, so do you just pay the fee and then see if a spot is open or do you have to spend more per spot?

another vote for oklahoma. other than the out of state total now at $700 for licenses its a great state for deer. i'm on a lease in the south central part of the state and have a healthy deer population on our lease along with turkeys and hogs.

That’s the charge for the year. Go every day of the year if you want to.
