The San Diego Padres hired former reliever Craig Stammen to be their new manager in an unconventional move.
Stammen, 41, ended his playing career in August 2023 and spent the past two seasons as an assistant to the major league coaching staff. He has no prior managerial experience at any level of the sport.
Stammen replaces Mike Shildt, who retired in October after two years as manager.

Cleveland did this with Stephen Vogt. He was on the M’s staff for one year prior. I think that has worked out well.

Sports fans are constantly complaining about anyone w/head man experience being a "retread" hire yet when a team gives somebody who hasn't done it their big chance they complain about that too.

Its baseball if you have played enough it you have enough experience if you have the mind set to manage.
