Japan deployed troops Wednesday to help contain a surge of bear attacks that have terrorized residents in a mountainous region in the northern prefecture of Akita

Reports of sometimes deadly encounters with brown bears and Asiatic black bears are being reported almost daily ahead of hibernation season as the bears forage for food. They have been seen near schools, train stations, supermarkets and at a hot springs resort.

Since April, more than 100 people have been injured and at least 12 killed in bear attacks across Japan, according to Environment Ministry statistics at the end of October.

The Defense Ministry and Akita prefecture signed an agreement Wednesday to deploy soldiers who will set box traps with food, transport local hunters and help dispose of dead bears. Officials say the soldiers will not use firearms to cull the bears.

The operation began in a forested area in Kazuno city, where a number of bear sightings and injuries have been reported. White-helmeted soldiers wearing bulletproof vests and carrying bear spray and net launchers set up a bear trap near an orchard

Imagine being the poor bastard assigned to bear duty with just a net and some bear spray

Thats a wild headline. I just recently watched a fascinating video on the Sankebetsu Brown bear incident where the Japanese military was sent out to protect from an aggressive bear and failed miserably.

Anyone remember this clip from a couple years ago where this Japanese hiker was attacked and he ended up throwing some hammer fists directly to the snout and landed a kick to the face?

Absolutely the only reason that guy is alive is being on high ground. That is intense.

That's a gnarly trail, much less having to deal with a bear.

actually sounds fun as shite

We should have a net launcher bear season here in CA. Maybe a mountain lion.

You’re allowed to carry a net launcher and a 4” buck knife.

You don't need the military, you just need a park ranger.

Japan has always had a large number of attacks compared to other areas. They usually average between 100-150 ! Year. Still, the past couple of years have seen a pretty significant increase with 219 last year and more this year.

They believe their bears are being driven from the more rural/remote areas due to a collapse in some food sources a couple of years in a row now. That has led them to delay hibernation and end it earlier than normal.

I've read a couple of times where researchers in Japan think some bears may not hibernate at all this year.
